Wing Holder

 |
|
Description: This Wing Holder is simply a decorated panel attached to thick rings at the top and bottom. Loops are created with short sennits of Square Knots, and there are “wing-shaped” designs for decoration. The loops are arranged so that kitchen items, such as spoons and knives, can be hung. You can use it to display bottles as well. Try using this design in the bathroom to hold hand towels and tooth brushes.
This Macrame Pattern is rated easy, so is a suitable beginner’s project.

Here is a diagram you can use. It shows you the different areas of the Wing Holder you are making.
Click on the image and a larger one will come up, in a new window.
Step 1: Cut 12 cords, each 6 yards long. Prepare the ends with tape, glue, or wax to prevent unraveling. Fold each cord in half and mount it to the bottom area of one ring with a Larks Head knot. |
|
|
| |
Step 2: Mentally number the cords 1 thru 24, moving left to right. Use cords 1 thru 4 to tie a Spiral Stitch sennit consisting of 8 knots. Slide a bead over all 4 strands, and tie the rest of the sennit (8 knots).
Repeat this process with cords 21 thru 24. |

Wing Design |
| |
Step 3: Use the strands that are left to make the wing-shaped design at the top of the Wing Holder. Mentally number these cords 1 thru 16.
Start by directing cord 1 towards the center, diagonally (45 degree angle). Secure it so it’s taut, since it is a holding cord. Attach cords 2 thru 8 to it with Double Half Hitches. |
| |
Step 4: Direct cord 16 towards the center, on the same angle. It’s the next holding cord, so be sure it’s taut. Attach cords 15 thru 9 to it with DHH, in that order. |
| |
Step 5: Direct cord 2 towards the center, as the next holding cord. It should rest beside the bar formed by the first row of knots (on the left). Attach cords 3 thru 8 to it with DHH. Make sure you pull them tight, so there is little space between the two rows.
Step 6: Cord 15 is the next holding cord on the right. Attach cords 14 thru 9 to it with DHH.
Step 7: Direct cord 3 towards the center next. Attach cords 4 thru 8 to it with DHH.
Step 8: Then next holding cord on the right is 14. Attach cords 13 thru 9 to it with DHH. |
| |
Step 9: The last holding cord on the left is 4. Attach cords 5 thru 8 to it with DHH.
Step 10: On the right, the final holding cord will be 13. Attach cords 12 thru 9 to it with DHH.
Step 11: Arrange the holding cords (1-4 and 13 - 16), so the strands 1 and 16 are the working cords and the rest are fillers. Tie a Square Knot. |
| |
Step 12: The cords you just used will still be holding cords, but are not in the same order as they were before. So mentally re-number the cords, so those particular strands are in the middle.
Cords 5 and 12 are the holding cords for the first row. Direct them towards the left and right edges of the Wing Holder. Attach cords 4 thru 1 to the left holding cord, and 13 thru 16 to the right one, with DHH. |
| |
Step 13: Cords 6 and 11 are the next holding cords. On the left, attach cords 4 thru 1, along with holding cord 5, with DHH. That's the holding cord used in the previous row. On the right, attach cords 13 thru 16, as well as holding cord 12.
Step 14: The next holding cords are 7 and 10. Attach 4 - 1 on the left, 13 - 16 on the right. Be sure to attach both sets of holding cords from the previous rows.
Step 15: The final set of holding cords is 8 and 9. Attach cords 4 - 1 and 13 - 16 as you did before, along with all the holding cords from the previous rows. |

Center Section (Loops) |

Step 16: Tie 6 rows of Alternating Square Knots, using all the available strands.
Step 17: Mentally number the cords 1 thru 24. Use cords 3 thru 6, and tie a chain of Square Knots, measuring 4 inches. This will create the loop near the left edge of the Wing Holder.
Do the same with cords 19 thru 22.
Step 18: Tie the next row of ASK, using all the cords. You will need to fold the loops in the process.
Step 19: Tie 7 more rows of ASK.
Step 20: Repeat steps 17 thru 19 to make the second set of loops.
Step 21: Repeat steps 17 thru 19 to make a third set of loops. If you want another set of loops for your Wing Holder, repeat the same process one last time.
Step 25: Tie 3 rows of ASK to finish the central section. |

| |
Bottom Section |
| |
Step 26: Repeat steps 2 thru 15, to make the design at the bottom of the Wing Holder.
Step 27: Attach all the cords to the other ring (or dowel) with Larks Head Knots. It’s just like making DHH, only the cord passes under the ring to make the second half of the knot.
Step 28: Trim the ends so they are even. Direct them to the back of the Wing Hanger, and glue them in place. You can pass them through the back of one or more knots to hold them.
Attach a hook to the wall, and place the top ring over it. Add the kitchen or bathroom items, passing them through the loops of your Wing Holder. |
