Wave Necklace

The Wave Necklace

Description:  The Wave Necklace is a simple design that looks very luxurious if you use Satin Rayon Cord (Rattail).  This type of cord is perfect for the interlocking design formed by this Celtic knot. Of course, you can use other types of cord material to make this pretty necklace. Be sure to make it with soft material, since this necklace rests close to the skin.

Supplies Needed:

  • 2mm Satin Rayon cord, or other material
  • 1 jewelry clasp (2-part)
  • Project Board and pins

Knots Used:

Cutting and Preparing Cords

Step 1:  Measure the distance around your neck and add several inches, depending on how long you want the finished necklace to be.  Multiply that number by 8.  Cut 2 strands of material, each the length you came up with.

Prepare the ends by applying glue, beginning 1 inch away from the tips.  Allow the glue to dry completely before continuing.

Designing the First Half

Step 2:  Pass both strands through the opening or hook on the pendant, and center them.  Use 1 strand to tie a Sliding Celtic Button Knot around the other 3 cords.  When tightening it, be sure to arrange it so it covers the hook on the pendant, if it has one. It should rest as close to the pendant as possible.

Step 3:  Secure the button knot to the project board with a pin.  You will use 2 strands for each half of the necklace.  They will work together as if they were 1 cord.  Start the first Figure Eight knot by making the bottom loop in a clockwise direction.  Be sure to pass the ends under the first part of the loop.

To complete the Figure 8, rotate the ends counter-clockwise to make the top loop.  Direct the ends down to the bottom loop, so they rest beneath and in the center of it.

The entire knot should be approximately ½ inch in size.  Try to make it as small as you can, but still have some space between the coils.

Tip:  If you prefer, you can make the Wave Necklace horizontally, but I find it easier to have it right in front of me, heading towards my body.

Step 4:  Make the second loop approximately 1 inch in size, rotating the ends in a counter-clockwise direction.  Pass the ends through the bottom of the first Figure 8, heading right to left.  The cord needs to weave through that area, passing under the portion of the cord that runs beneath the central part of the loop.  This links the two knots.

Step 5:  Flip the left portion of the second loop over the right.  Direct the ends so they rest beneath the bottom portion, heading vertically.

Step 6:  Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have tied enough knots to make half the necklace.  The final Figure Eight knot should be tightened down as much as possible, without altering the shape of the previous knot.

Creating the Second Half

Step 7:  Pass the ends of the strands for the opposite half through the top loop of the first Figure Eight tied in step 3.

Design the horizontal figure 8 pattern following steps 3 thru 6 above.  I find it easier to turn the Wave Necklace around, so I am making the knots in the same direction.

Attaching the Clasp

Step 8:  At one end of the necklace, direct the 2 strand through the loop in the clasp.  They should pass through in opposite directions.  Pull on the ends so the clasp rests close to the overall design.  Tie a tight Square Knot with the ends.

Apply glue and allow it to dry completely before cutting off the excess.  If you have enough cord, you can make another Celtic Button Knot instead of a Square Knot.

Step 9:  Repeat step 8 at the other end of the Wave Necklace. Once the glue is dry, the necklace is ready to wear.
