Vintage Collar Trim

Vintage Collar Trim

Description: This Vintage Collar Trim is a Macrame pattern that can be used to decorate the collars, sleeves, or hemlines of clothing. You can decorate T-shirts, jeans, or skirts with this technique. I consider it a Vintage pattern, because the oval shape of this particular Macrame band was commonly used back in the early 1900s. This is not a pattern for a beginner, as it requires the use of fine cord, which can be a challenge.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1mm Cotton Embroidery cord, or similar material
  • Project Board
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Article of Clothing

Knots Used:

Cutting and Mounting the Cords

Step 1: Measure the collar, sleeve, or hemline of the article of clothing you plan to decorate with this Macrame design. Make sure the measurement is very accurate, with no overlap. Multiply the measurement by 8. Cut 3 strands of cord the length you came up with. Also, cut one strand, 12 inches long.

Step 2: The short cord will be used as a holding cord. Secure it to your project board horizontally. Mount the 3 long strands to it, using Larks Head knots. When finished, you should have 6 strands to work with.

Creating the Trim Design

Step 3: Tie a single Square knot, using 4 strands to make the knot, and 2 strands as fillers.

Step 4: Separate the cords into 2 groups of 3 strands. The middle cord in each group will hold the knots. In the first group, tie a Vertical Larks Head knot with the working cord on the right, onto the middle holding cord. Then do the same, just below, with the cord on the left. Continue to alternate back and forth, as you tie a total of 6 knots.

Step 5: Repeat step 4, using the other group of cords.

Step 6: Tie a Square knot, using all cords, as you did in Step 3. This completes the first "link" in the Vintage collar trim.

Step 7: Repeat steps 4 and 5, but tie a total of 8 knots instead. Be sure to start the knots with the cord on the right.

Step 8: Tie a Square knot, using all cords, as you did in Step 3.

Step 9: Repeat steps 4 and 5, but tie a total of 10 knots instead.

Step 10: Tie one Square knot, switch cords, and tie a second one.

Step 11: Repeat step 4 through 10 as many times as needed to fit the article of clothing you are decorating.

Finishing Touches

Step 12: Finish by passing the ends of the strands through the space between the knots you tied in steps 2 and 3. Use the ends of the 12-inch holding cord, and tie a Square knot around all the other cords (use them as fillers). Then make a regular square knot (no fillers). Tie it tightly, and apply glue to both knots. When dry, cut off any remaining cord.

Step 13: Attach the Vintage collar trim to the item you are decorating by hand, sewing it with the needle and thread. You can also attach it with a sewing machine, but keep in mind that it might be too thick for some machines.
