Two Tone Hanger
|
| |
|
| |
 |
|
Description: The Two Tone Hanger takes advantage of contrasting colors to produce a very interesting design.
The long sennits in the middle have very few knots, so it is very open and delicate in appearance.
This Macrame project is rated Easy to Moderate, so is suitable for beginners.
Knots Used:

| |
| Supplies Needed: |
| |
- 6mm Macrame Cord (75 yards of each color)
- One 2-inch Brass Ring
- One 2-inch Wood or Marbella Ring
- Two 3-inch Wood or Marbella Rings
- 12 to 14-inch diameter Pot
- Measuring Tape

Cutting and Mounting Process |
| |
Cut the Cords as follows:
- Color A – 8 cords, each 9 yards long
- Color B – 8 cords, each 9 yards long
- Either color – 2 cords, each 36 inches long
|
| |
| Prepare the ends of the long cords with a coat of glue or wax to prevent unraveling. You can also apply tape to the ends of all the cords for the Two Tone Hanger. |
| |
Step 1: Fold the Color A cords in half and pass them through the 2-inch Brass ring, so they rest on the bottom of it. Center them so the ends are even. Do the same with the Color B cords, placing them on top of the first set.
Step 2: Make a Wrapped Knot around all the strands, using one of the 36-inch cords. Wrap for at least 2 inches. Start the knot just below the ring. Apply a light coat of glue to the entire knot when you are finished.. When it’s dry, cut off the excess from the short cord used to make the wraps. Be careful not to cut the long strands. |

| Step 3: Attach the 16 Color B cords ONLY, to a 2-inch Wood or Marbella ring, with Double Half Hitches. It helps if you direct the cords into the ring before you tie the DHH. The Color A cords should be directed through the center of the ring, without knotting them. If the ring is not completely covered, you can add single Half Hitches as needed. |
| |
Step 4: Directly beneath the ring, tie 3 rows of Alternating Square Knots using only the Color B cords. Each knot should consist of 4 strands, so there will be a total of 4 ASK per row.
Step 5: Attach all 32 cords (both colors) to a 3-inch ring with DHH. Alternate the colors, by attaching 4 Color B, then 4 Color A, and so on. It helps to pass the cords into the ring before tying the knots. If you can see the ring, add more Half Hitches until it is completely covered. |
| |
Step 6: Tie 6 rows of Alternating Square Knots with the Color B cords only. The total length of this area of the Two Tone Hanger should measure approximately 6 inches.
Step 7: Tie 3 rows of Alternating Square Knots with groups of 4 Color A cords, so they are on the outside of the other ones. There should be approximately 2 inches of space between the rows, so the design measures 6 inches. You will be able to see the Color B cords through the spaces between the knots.
Step 8: Repeat step 5. |

Step 9: To make the long sennits for the Two Tone Hanger, organize the Color A cords into four groups consisting of 4 strands. Using one group, move down 4 inches and tie one SK. Next, move down 8 inches and tie another SK. Move down 8 inches again, and tie the last SK.
Do the same with the other 3 groups of Color A cords.
Step 10: Repeat the process with the Color B cords. First, move down 8 inches and tie a SK with the group of 4 strands. Move down 8 inches again and tie another SK. Move down 4 inches and tie the last SK in the sennit. This way the Square Knots are not in the same areas as the previous ones you tied.
Repeat with the other 3 groups of Color B cords. |

Making the Cradle |
| |
Step 11: It's a good idea to have the pot handy as you make this Cradle for the Two Tone Hanger. The measurements suggested below can be changed, depending on the height of the pot you are using.
This next row of Square knots should rest close to the top rim of the pot. Move down at least 4 inches and combine 4 Color B strands with 4 Color A cords. Be sure to use the cords from sennits that are resting next to one another.
Tie one tight Square Knot with the 8 strands. The cords at the outside of the bundle should be used as the working cords, and the rest will be fillers. |
| |
| Repeat the process with the other 3 groups that are left. |
| |
Step 12: Measure the distance between the top and bottom of the pot. Figure out what the halfway point should be. Move down that distance, so the next row of knots will rest mid way between the top and bottom. |
| |
Separate the cords into the two different colors again. Direct the 2 groups to the right and left, combining them with cords resting in the other areas. You'll still be combining 4 black and 4 white strands, but they won't be adjacent to one another.
In other words, you need to alternate the groups so the knots are resting between the ones tied in step 11 (but lower down).
Tie one tight SK with the 8 strands. Then repeat the process with the other groups. |
| |
Step 13: Move down at least 2 inches and tie another row of SK, just as you did in the previous step (combining cords from non-adjacent sennits). This row of knots should rest near the bottom curve of the pot.
Step 14: Tie a last row of SK, just as you did the last 2 rows. These knots should rest under the pot, mid-way between the edge and the center of the bottom surface. |

Finishing Touches |
| |
Step 15: Bring all the strands together to form the fringe for the Two Tone Hanger. Tie a Wrapped Knot around them, using the remaining 36-inch cord. The knot should rest in the center of the pot's bottom area.
Apply a thin coat of glue to the Wrapped Knot. When it's dry, cut off the excess from the short cord use to make the knot. The ends of the long cords will be used for the fringe.
Step 16: Make adjustments as needed, so the Two Tone Hanger is balanced and the pot rests evenly in the cradle.
Step 17: Trim the ends so they are even. Finish them with Barrel Knots, so they don’t unravel. If you want a beaded Fringe, apply the beads to the tips, followed by a Barrel Knot.
Another alternative is to unravel the strands, which produces a finer Fringe. You can brush these fibers to form a fluffy fringe for your Two Tone Hanger. |
