| Description:
Turks Head Coasters are an interesting application of the
Flat Turk’s Head Knot. Just follow the instructions
below, and you’ll have a set of very attractive coasters
in no time at all. The triangles in the center represent water
and fire. When I made it the first time, and understood the
symbols involved, I immediately thought it was perfect for
holding a drinking glass. Try making a larger version to hold
your pots & pans. If you made it smaller, and with delicate
cord, this design would make a great Micro-Macrame pendant.
Supplies Needed:
- 6mm Braided Macrame Cord, or similar material.
- Project Board
- T-Pins or Straight Pins
Decorative Knot used: Flat
Turks Head Knot
Step 1: Cut one strand of cord 80 inches
long. Prepare the ends before you get started.
Step 2: Make a Flat Turk’s Head
Knot. If you don’t remember how, go to the directions
by clicking on the link above.
Step 3: After you make five (5) loops,
you will be back at the starting point. Tighten the knot
until you get to the right size to fit your glassware. Follow
the path around again with the remaining length of cord.
It’s easier if you go around to the outside
of the first set of coils. Adjust and tighten as necessary,
to obtain a flat design.
Step 4: Once you’re satisfied with
the overall shape and design, direct the ends to the under
side of the coaster. Trim them so they are 1 inch long.
Finish them off by weaving the ends into the pattern, and
applying glue to secure.
Step 5: Apply a thin coating of glue or
varnish to the entire bottom of the coaster. If you wish,
you can also highlight the center section with cloth paint.
