Triple Table

  Triple Table

Description:  The Triple Table is unique in the fact that it has three levels.  At each level is a ring that can hold a piece of wood or glass, to form a table.  You can also set plant pots directly on the wrapped rings, if you want to use this design as a plant hanger.

This Macrame pattern is lengthy, but beginners who have some experience should be able to make it successfully.  The total length of this hanging table is approximately 90 inches.

Knots Used:

Supplies Needed:

  • 6mm Macrame Cord (466 yards total)
  • One 2-inch Metal Ring
  • Two 7-inch Metal Rings
  • Three 10-inch Metal Rings
  • Two 15-inch Metal Rings
  • Wood or Glass Table Tops:  10-inch, 15-inch, and 20-inch
  • Measuring Tape

Cutting and Preparing the Cords

  • Cut 16 cords, each 22 yards long
  • Cut 8 cords, each 11 yards long
  • Cut 2 cords, each 36 inches long
  • Cut 2 cords, each 9 yards long
  • Cut 1 cord, 6 yards long

Prepare the ends of all the cords to prevent them from unraveling as you make the Triple Table.   See Cord Preparation for more details.

Top Hanger

Step 1:  Take the 22-yard cords, and locate the center of them.  Lay them on the floor or a table, resting side-by-side.  Tie a Square Knot in the center, using the two strands on the outside of the group as the working cords. The rest are the fillers.  The knot will be very thick.

Next, tie 5 more SK, moving from the center towards one end.  Turn the sennit around, and tie another set of 5 SK on the other side of the central knot.

Step 2:  Pass the sennit through the 2-inch ring, folding the sennit in half, so it’s balanced.

Use a 36-inch cord to make a 2-inch long Wrapped Knot around all the cords, so they are in a tight bundle.  Apply glue to the Wrapped Knot and allow it to dry completely before moving on to the next step for the Triple Table.  Cut off the excess from the short cord.

  Diagram

Here's a diagram of the Triple Table, showing the different steps involved in creating it.

Steps 1 and 2 are not shown.

Steps 19-24 are under the lowest table, so cannot be seen.

Step 3:  Organize the cords into 4 groups consisting of 8 strands.  Make a Lanyard Knot with the multiple cords.  Once you have the first knot tightened and neatly arranged, tie additional Lanyard knots, until the entire sennit measures 4 inches.

Step 4:  Separate the cords into 8 groups of 4 strands. Mentally number the groups 1 thru 8.

Tie a Spiral Stitch sennit in groups 1, 3, 5, and 7.  They should each measure 7 inches in length.

Tie a Square Knot sennit in groups 2, 4, 6, and 8. These sennits should measure 7 inches long, too.

Wrap Sennit Around Ring   Step 5: Attach the cords from one sennit to a 7-inch ring.  Wrap the last few knots of the sennit around the metal, from the outside to the inside, forming a loop.  The ends will be on the inside of the ring.

  Pass Ends Through Sennit

To secure the loop, direct the end of each cord through the sennit you are working with, from inside to outside. You may need to use needle nose pliers or tweezers to do this.

  First Half Hitch

Separate the four strands so that two head to either side of the looped sennit. Direct each end into the ring first, then tie the Half Hitch. Once it is tightened, make the second one.

Repeat this process with the remaining 7 sennits.  Make sure you place them on the ring so they alternate (spiral - straight - spiral, etc.)

Note: If this ring for the Triple Table is not completely covered, add a few more Half Hitches beside the others.

Top Table

Step 6: Prepare a 10-inch ring by wrapping it with a 6-yard cord.  Start by folding the cord in half and attaching it to the ring with a reverse Larks Head knot.  Take each end and tie a series of Half Hitches to cover the ring completely, heading in opposite directions.  When you are finished, tie a tight Square Knot with the ends (no fillers).  Cut off any excess material.

Step 7:  Hang the Triple Table up by the ring at the top.  Divide the cords up into 8 groups of 4.  Tie a Square Knot sennit in each group, measuring 10 inches long.

Step 8:  Direct the filler cords for one sennit to the inside of the 10-inch wrapped ring.  The working cords should rest on the outside.  Tie another SK, using the same filler cords, which will come forward to hold the ring in place.  Someone may need to help you hold the ring while you complete this important step.

Repeat the process with the remaining sennits.

Step 9: Tie 5 more SK in each sennit.  Take 2 strands from one sennit and two from the next one over.  Move down 2 inches, and tie one SK with the alternated cords.  Do this all the way around the Triple Table design.

Step 10:  Attach all the cords to a 7-inch ring with Double Half Hitches. If the ring is not completely covered, add a few extra Half Hitches.

Middle Table

Step 11: Prepare a 15-inch ring by wrapping it with an 9-yard cord.  Follow the same process you did in step 6.

Step 12: Divide the cords into 8 groups of four strands again.  Mentally number each group 1 thru 8.

Tie a straight SK sennit in groups 1, 3, 5, and 7.  Each sennit should measure 20 inches long.

Tie a Spiral Stitch sennit in groups 2, 4, 6, and 8. These should be 20 inches, too.

Step 13: Direct the filler cords for a sennit to the inside of the 15-inch ring.  The working cords should be on the outside.  Tie another SK in the sennit, which will hold the ring in place.  This is the same process as in step 8 of the Triple Table.

Repeat the process with the remaining sennits.

Step 14:  Tie 5 more SK in each sennit.  Take two cords from one sennit, and two from the next one over.  Move down 2 inches, and tie a SK with the alternated cords.  Repeat the process in the other groups.

Step 15:  Attach all the cords for the Triple Table to a 10-inch ring, with DHH.  Leave space between each of the sennits.

Lower Table

Step 16:  Fold the eight 11-yard cords in half.  Attach them to the 10-inch ring with reverse Larks Head knots. Place two of them in each of the spaces you left, between the sennits. If the ring is not completely covered, add extra Half Hitches as needed.

Step 17: Organize all the cords into 12 groups, consisting of 4 strands. Make two of one type (flat), followed by two of the second type (spiral), all the way around the ring.  These sennits should measure 36 inches long.

Step 18:  Wrap the other 15-inch ring the same way you did the other two, using another 9-yard cord. (See step 6)

Step 19:  Take the filler cords from one of the sennits, and direct them to the inside of the 15-inch ring.  The working cords should be on the outside.  Tie the next SK in the sennit, to secure the ring.  This ring will fit below the table top at the bottom of the Triple Table.

Repeat the process with the 11 remaining sennits.

Step 20:  Tie 5 more SK in each sennit.  Alternate the cords, selecting two strands from sennits that are next to each other.  Tie one SK with the alternated cords.  DO NOT move down, like you did in previous steps. Try to place the SK as close to the end of the sennits as possible.

Step 21:  Attach each cord to the last 10-inch ring with DHH.  This ring will also fit under the lower level of the Triple Table.

Step 22:  Divide the cords into 4 groups consisting of 12 strands.  Tie 1 Lanyard Knot with the multiple cords, so it rests in the center of the 10-inch ring. Make sure the cords are neatly arranged before moving on.

Finishing Touches

Step 23:  Gather all the cords together in a bundle.  Use the remaining 36-inch cord to tie a Wrapped Knot around them.  Make it as tight as possible.  Apply glue and allow it to dry before cutting off the excess from the short cord.

Step 24:  Trim the remaining cords so they are even.  You can finish the fringe in one of the following ways:

  • Apply Beads to each end, followed by a Barrel Knot
  • Apply glue to the ends to prevent unraveling
  • Unravel the ends to produce a wavy design
  • Tie a tight Barrel knot at the end of each cord
  • Tie a Matthew Walker knot on each end

Step 25:  Place the 10-inch glass or wood circle on the 10-inch ring in the top section of the Triple Table.

The 15-inch circle goes on top of the ring in the middle section.

The 20-inch circle goes on the 15-inch ring at the bottom.  The sennits need to be bent slightly in that area, so the edges are supported.
