Three Shades Purse

Three Shades Purse

Description:  The Three Shades Purse is designed with three different colors.  This Macramé project is easy and uses only basic knots, so is suitable for beginners.  Do you prefer 1 color? This handbag pattern can be constructed using cords all the same color.  You could even make it with 2 colors. The finished design is approximately 16 inches wide and 14 inches tall.

Supplies Needed:

  • 6mm Macramé Cord in 3 colors (45 yards of each)
  • 2 Purse Handles
  • Project Board and Pins

Knots Used:

Cutting and Mounting Cords

Cut 16 strands of each color, all 100 inches long.

Prepare the ends with tape, glue, or wax to prevent unraveling.  See Cord Preparation for more details.

Step 1:  Mount the cords to 1 of the handles as follows, using Larks Head knots. Move left to right, folding the cords in half as you attach them:

4 color A cords -- 8 color B cords -- 4 color C cords

Mount the same number of cords on the other handle, with the colors in reverse:

4 color C cords – 8 color B cords – 4 color A cords

Step 2:  Tie a row of Square knots, so they rest just below the mounting knots.  Use 2 strands as working cords, and 2 as fillers for each knot.

Adding More Cords

Step 3:  Mentally number the strands coming from one handle, 1 through 32 (moving left to right).  Add a cord by folding it in half and pinning it to the board, just to the left of cord 1.  Add another one the same way, placing it to the right of cord 32. Make sure the colors match the ones already mounted.

Tie a row of Square Knots using ALL the strands (including the new ones). Remove the pins from the added cords, and pull on the ends to remove any slack.

Step 4: Mentally re-number the strands 1 through 36.  Add 2 more cords just as you did in step 3.  They should be pinned to the left of cord 1, and to the right of cord 36. Tie another row of Square Knots, making sure that the strands used to tie the knots are alternated.

Step 5:  Repeat this process 2 more times.  Alternate the cords each time you tie a new row of ASK.

Step 6:  Repeat Steps 3 thru 5 for the other half of the Three Shades Purse.

Joining each Half

Step 7:  Arrange both halves of the handbag so the inside surfaces are together.  Placing them between your knees really helps in this step.  Tie 1 SK using the strands furthest to the left edge of the design.  Two of the strands should come from one half, and the other 2 from the opposite half of the purse.

Step 8: Repeat step 7 with the four strands furthest to the right edge of the Three Shades Purse.

Step 9: Complete the row by tying Alternating Square Knots using the remaining strands.

Designing the Body

Step 10:  Tie 12 rows of Alternating Square knots using all the cords.  If you have more than 12 inches of cord left (shortest strands), you can tie additional rows.

Step 11:  To round the corners near the bottom, tie another row of ASK, and bypass the knots that are closest to the right and left edges.  You simply tie the knots around those omitted cords, and push them to the inside.  Do this on both halves of the Three Shades Purse.

Step 12:  Repeat step 11 two more times, omitting 4 cords per row.

Closing the Bottom/Finishing Touches

Step 13:  Turn the Three Shades Purse inside out.  Place it between your knees so you can access the bottom easily.  Take 1 cord from the front half, and the same from the other half of the purse.  Tie a tight Square Knot with these 2 strands (no fillers).  It helps if you start at the corners and work your way towards the middle.

Continue this process until all the cords are used and the bottom is closed.

Step 14:  Apply glue to all the knots on the bottom.  When it is dry, trim the ends so they are 1 inch long, and unravel them to form a fluffy fringe.  If you prefer, you can weave them into the overall design instead of making the fringe.

Turn the Three Shade Purse so the fringe is on the inside (right side out), and it's ready to be used.
