Description: The Sunny Delight Hanger looks great in bright, festive colors, such as yellow or orange. It is a double plant hanger, and can hold two 14-inch pots. The finished length is approximately 95 inches, which includes the fringe at the bottom.
This design is pretty basic, so beginners should find this Macrame pattern easy to follow. To embellish this plant hanger, you can add artificial butterflies, beads, or even small bells.
Supplies Needed:
- 6mm Macrame Cord (190 yards)
- One 2-inch Wood, Plastic, or Brass Ring
- Two 14-inch pots

Cutting Instructions |

- Cut 8 cords, each 17 yards long
- Cut 3 cords, each 2 yards long
Prepare the ends with tape, glue or wax, to prevent unraveling. |

Top Design |
| |
Step 1: Fold the 6-yard cords in half, and place them through the ring. Do the same with the 17-yard cords, placing them on top of the first set. Make sure they are all centered.
Step 2: Use a 2-yard cord to make a Wrapped Knot around all the cords, just below the ring. It should be between 2 and 3 inches long. Apply glue to the knot, and allow it to dry before cutting off the excess (from the 2-yard cord only). |
| |
Tip: Since you are working with very long cords to make the Sunny Delight Hanger, it’s a good idea to wrap them in what is called a “butterfly”. You simply wrap each strand around your hand until most of it is used up. Take a small portion (close to the end) and wrap around the center of the bundle. You can apply tape to hold it together, or simply tuck the end under one of the coils. |
| |
| Step 3: Organize the cords into 8 groups, consisting of 4 cords each. There should be two long strands (working cords), and two short ones (fillers), in each group. |
| |
| |
| |
 |
|
Step 4: Mentally number the groups 1 thru 8. In groups 1, 3, 5, and 7, tie a Spiral Stitch sennit measuring 22 inches long.
This diagram shows you the two kinds of sennits you will be making for the Sunny Delight Hanger.
Click on the image to see a larger one, which will come up in a new window.
Step 5: In groups 2, 4, 6, and 8, tie each of the sennits as follows:
|
|
|
| |
| |
Step A: Tie a Square Knot, so it rests close to the Wrapped Knot.
Step B: Tie a Vertical Larks Head knot, using the right working cord. Tie it around the filler cords. The head of the knot will face right.
Step C: Move down 1 inch. Use the left working cord to tie a Vertical Larks Head knot onto the fillers. Push it up to the first one, forming a picot on the left.
Step D: Move down 1 inch. Use the right cord again, tying the Vertical LH. Push it up to form the picot on the right.
Step E: Repeat steps C and D until the sennit measures 22 inches. Tie a Square Knot. |
| |
| |
Cradle |
| |
Step 6: To make the cradle for the top portion of the Sunny Delight Hanger, start by organizing the sennits. They should alternate back and forth between the two types. Take two cords from a Spiral Sennit and two from the next one over, which will be a Larks Head sennit. Move down 4 inches, and tie a Square Knot.
Continue repeating this process around the Sunshine Delight Hanger, working in a circle. |
| |
Step 7: Alternate the cords, so you use two from one Square Knot and two from the next one over. Move down 2.5 inches, and tie a SK.
Repeat the process with the remaining cords.
Step 8: Alternate cords again. Move down 1.5 inches, and tie a SK. Repeat with the remaining cords.
Make sure the pot fits inside the cradle for the Sunny Delight Hanger. If not, adjust the knots as needed. If possible, leave the pot in the cradle for the next step.
Step 9: Bring all the cords together below the pot. Use a 2-yard cord to make a Wrapped Knot measuring 2 to 3 inches long. Apply glue to the knot and allow it to dry before cutting off the excess material (from the 2-yard cord only). |
| |
| |
Lower Design |
| |
Step 10: The second design on the bottom of the Sunny Delight Hanger is the same as the top one. So repeat steps 3 thru 9. |
| |
Step 11: The fringe at the bottom can be finished off in the following ways: |
| |
Method A: Trim the ends so they are even, and tie Barrel Knots at the tips.
Method B: Trim the ends and apply glue to the tip of each cord.
Method C: Tie a Matthew Walker Knot at the tip of each cord.
Method D: Trim the ends and apply 15mm beads to the tips of each cord, followed by a Barrel Knot. |
