Square Knot Belt
|
| |
|
| |
Description: The Square Knot Belt is made with only one type of decorative knot. Even though the Square Knot is a very basic technique, the ways it is used in this Macrame pattern results in a unique design. This is a good pattern for beginners and children to learn how to use Square Knots in different ways. |
| |
Supplies Needed:
- 4mm or 6mm Braided cord, or similar material
- One piece of 2mm cord, 18 inches long
- One shank-style button for the clasp
- Beads (optional)
- Project Board and pins
|
| |
Knots Used: Square Knot (SK) and
Mirror Square Knot (MSK)
|
| |
Creating the First Half |
| |
Step 1: Measure your waist or hips where the Square Knot Belt will rest. Take that number and multiply by 5. Cut 2 strands of material, each the measurement you came up with.
Cut 4 more cords, each 65 inches long. Prepare the ends of all the strands with glue, tape, or wax to prevent unraveling.
Step 2: Lay the strands down vertically in front of you, on the project board. Secure each of them at the center. The shorter strands should be between the 2 longer ones.
Step 3: Tie a Square Knot near the pins, using the long strands as the working cords. The short strands are the fillers. This first knot should be as tight as you can make it. |
| |
Step 4: Mentally number the strands 1 thru 6. Direct cords 1 and 6 to the side. Take cords 2 and 5 and direct them under cords 1 & 6. Tie a Mirror Square Knot, using cords 3 and 4 as the fillers.
Step 5: Direct cords 2 and 5 to the side. Take cords 1 and 6 and direct them under cords 2 and 5. Tie a Square knot, using cords 3 and 4 as the fillers.
Step 6: Repeat step 4.
Step 7: Repeat step 5. |

 |
|
Do you understand the pattern yet? The fillers are always cords 3 and 4. The working cords alternate between 2 & 5, and 1 & 6. The knots change direction as well. This is called a Square Knot alternating sennit, and is quite interesting. |

To add beads, you can slide them on the working cords, and they will end up along the edges of the design.
Step 8: Continue the pattern until the belt is half the length you need, minus 1 inch. |
|
|
| |
| |
Creating the Second Half |
| |
Step 9: Turn the Square Knot belt around, and repeat steps 4 thru 8. The very first knot you tie should be the second half of the Square Knot only, using cords 1 and 6. If you tie both parts of the knot, the pattern won’t look right in the center. |

Designing the Clasp |
| |
Step 10: At one end of the belt, separate the 6 strands into 2 groups of 3. Tie a 2-inch chain of Square Knots with the group on the left. There will be 1 filler cord. Do the same on the right, but tie Mirror SK instead.
Step 11: Bring all the strands together. Use the longest strands as the working cords and tie a tight SK. There will be 4 fillers. |
| |
| |
Finishing Touches |
| |
Step 12: Direct the ends to the back of the Square Knot belt and weave each of them into spaces in the design. You can trim the cords a bit first, if they are longer than 5 inches.
Step 13: At the other end, take the piece of 2mm cord and center it under the 6 strands. Secure it to your project board. Use it as the working cord and tie a tight SK. There will be six fillers. Direct the ends of the 6mm cords to the back of the belt and weave them into the design as you did in step 12.
Step 14: Attach the button to the 2mm cords. The best way to do this is to pass 1 portion through the button in one direction. The second half of the cord should go through the opposite direction. Tie a Square Knot, and be sure it is tight. Apply glue. Direct the remainder to the back of the Square Knot Belt and weave the ends in as you did the others. |
