Snowflake Decoration

Snowflake Decoration

Description: This Snowflake Decoration is easy to make and is suitable for children or a beginner’s Macrame project. There is a space in the center where you can put a silk flower, ribbon, or other item to embellish this pretty design.

Supplies Needed:
  • 2mm or 4mm White Macramé Cord or similar material
  • 1-inch white, silver, or brass Ring
  • Decoration for center ( like the Poinsettia Silk Flower in image)
  • Needle-Nose Pliers

Knots Used:

Cutting the Cords

Step 1: Decide whether you want the Snowflake Decoration to have 4, 5, or 6 points. Then cut the cords as follows:
  • 4 Points: Four 20-inch strands and Four 50-inch strands
  • 5 points: Five 20-inch strands and Five 50-inch strands
  • 6 points: Six 20-inch strands and Six 50-inch strands

Creating the Snowflake Design

Step 2: Mount the 20-inch strands to the Ring with Larks Head Knots.

Step 3: Add one of the 50-inch cords to 2 of the mounted strands, with an Overhand Knot. You do this by tying an Overhand knot in the long strand, in the center of it. Don’t tighten it yet. Pass the ends of the short cords through the loop, and tighten the knot. It should rest next to the Larks Head. The long cords will be the working cords and the short ones fillers, for the next knots.

Step 4: Move down 3 inches, and tie a Square Knot. Push the knot up so it rests next to the Overhand Knot in step 3. The loops on the sides are the picots.

Step 5: Move down 2½ inches, and tie another Square knot with picots, as in the previous step.

Step 6: Move down 2 inches and tie another Square Knot picot. Tie 2 more Knots the same way, the first 1½ inches down, and the second 1-inch below the previous.

Step 7: Repeat steps 3 thru 6 for each of the remaining points.

Finishing Touches

Step 8: To finish off each of the points, use the right strand and wrap it around the others, beginning the Linen Stitch. Wrap it at least 3 times. Then use the left cord to do the second part of the technique. Direct the end to the back of the design. Trim the cord so it is 2 inches long. Weave it into the design, and apply glue to secure it.

Step 9: Cut off the remaining cords. If you want, you can cut them off completely, or you can leave 1 inch and unravel them to produce a short fringe. In the photo, I tied a Barrel knot instead, which is another option.

Step 10: You can embellish the Snowflake Decoration by adding silk flowers, ribbons, artificial birds, etc. Add a small piece of cord to one of the points for hanging.
