Royale Plant Hanger

  Royale Plant Hanger

Description:  The Royale plant hanger has a finished length of 5 feet (including the fringe).  It’s an easy design, suitable for beginners.  The top portion of this Macramé hanger is unique.  The sennits bulge outward, which is called a Royal or Crown design.  This lovely hanger is designed for pots that are approximately 8 inches tall.

Knots Used:

Supplies Needed:

  • 6mm Nylon Cord (110 yards)
  • One 2-inch Ring
  • 4 Beads with 10mm holes (or larger)
  • One 10 to 12-inch Pot
  • Tape Measure

Cutting Instructions:

Step 1:  Cut the cords as follows:

8 cords, each 13 yards long
1 cord, 2 yards long
3 cords, 1 yard long

Prepare the ends with glue, tape, or wax to prevent unraveling, especially if you are using twisted style cord.

Mounting Process

Step 2:  Use the 2-yard cord and fold it in half.  Attach it to the ring with a Larks Head Knot.  Tie a series of Larks Head knots onto the ring to cover it completely. If you prefer, you can use Half Hitches instead. Use one portion of the cord to cover one half of the ring.  Use the second portion to cover the opposite half. Tie a tight Square Knot with the 2 ends when you are finished. Cut off any excess cord.

Step 3:  Direct the 13-yard cords through the ring.  Place them over the Square Knot, to hide the ends.  Make sure the cords are centered, so they are balanced on either side of the ring.

Use a 1-yard cord and make a Wrapped Knot around the long cords, measuring 1½ inch.

Creating the Top Section

Step 4:  Divide the cords into 4 groups of 4 cords to make the Crown design for which the Royale Plant Hanger gets its name.  With each group tie a Square Knot sennit, measuring 6 inches.  There should be 2 working cords and 2 fillers for these knots.

Step 5:  Make another Wrapped Knot with a 1-yard cord.  Before tightening it, push it upwards, so the sennits bow outwards.  Complete the knot by tightening it as much as possible.

Designing the Middle Section and Cradle

Step 6:  Divide the cords into 4 groups again to make the long sennits of the Royale Plant Hanger.  Tie a Spiral Stitch sennit in one group, measuring 12 inches.  Add a bead over all 4 cords.  Select the 2 longest strands, and use them as the working cords.  Continue the sennit for another 12 inches.

Repeat the process with the other 3 groups.

Step 7:  Move down 4 inches.  Tie a row of  single Square Knots, using 2 cords from two sennits resting next to one another.

Step 8:  Move down 2 inches.  Alternate the cords and tie another row of Square knots.  By alternate, I mean that you should choose 2 cords coming from 2 different knots that are resting next to one another. See Alternating Square Knots for more details.

Step 9:  Move down 2 inches.  Make sure the pot fits the cradle of the Royale Plant Hanger.  If not, make adjustments as needed.  Use the last 1-yard cord to make a Wrapped Knot around the other cords, so it rests in the center of the pot (the bottom of it).

Step 10: Apply a thin coating of glue to the entire Wrapped knot, and allow it to dry.  Cut off the excess from the cord used to make the knot.  Trim the tails of the other cords to 20 inches.  Tie a Barrel Knot at the end of each one.  If you prefer, you can unravel the ends to form a more delicate fringe, or add beads followed by Barrel knots.
