Picot Key Ring

Picot Key Rings

Description: These Picot Key Rings feature a design made by a series of Square Knots with Picots. You can create different designs with this pattern, including a Pine Tree shape. Try making this Macrame pattern with the Spiral Stitch and Picots; the decorative effect is quite interesting.

Supplies Needed:

  • 2mm to 4mm Macrame cord material
  • Beads (optional)

Knots used:

    Picot Designs

Creating the Clasp

Step 1: Cut 2 strands of material, each 50 inches long. Make a Lanyard Knot in the center of the 2 cords. Flip the knot over and secure it to your Project board. Next, make a Square Knot using all 4 strands (2 fillers), 1 inch below the first knot.

Step 2: Move down another 1/4 inch, and tie a chain of 5 Square Knots. Direct all the ends into the small space to make the Square Knot Button. Switch cords, so the shortest ones are the fillers, before you make the Square Knot below the button to secure it.

Making the Picot Design

Step 3: Move down another ½ inch, and tie a Square knot. Slide it up to rest beside the previous one. Repeat this process 4 or 5 more times if you want the loops along the side (picots) to be the same size.

  Pine Tree-Shaped Key Ring

For a Pine Tree Shaped Picot Key Ring:

The first knot in Step 3 should be only ¼ inch below the knot securing the button knot. The next should be ½ inch away from the first. The next 3 knots need to be tied 1 inch, 1½ inch, and 2 inches away from the previous one. This way as you slide each one up, the picots are differents sizes.

A Butterfly Design can be made by spacing the first Square Knot 3 inches below the one securing the button, followed by another knot spaced 1½ inches away. For a Dragonfly, tie several knots spaced 2 inches from each other.

  Spiral Key Ring

For a Spiral Design:

Instead of using Square Knots use the Spiral Stitch for the Picot Key Ring. You will need to space the knots 1 inch apart to create the picots. This design also looks best if you make it at least 6 inches long.

Finishing Touches

Step 4: To create a loop to hang the keys, cut a short length of cord and make a Wrapped Knot around all the strands. After it’s tightened, take the end you were just using, and bring it down just below the wrapped knot. Make a half hitch around all the other strands. Choose a different end, and make another half hitch around the strands, including the one just used. Then tie a tight Overhand Knot with the same strand. Cut off any remaining material, and apply glue to the last knot tied.

If you prefer, you can omit the Wrapped Knot and add beads instead, making a tight Overhand knot just below to secure them.

Step 5: To complete the Picot Key Ring, direct the Lanyard knot at the top of the design to a split ring. Pass into the ring from below. Bring the entire design through the 1-inch space you left, forming something similar to a Larks Head Knot. Now you can attach your keys to the split ring.
