Natural Feature Hanger

Natural Feature Hanger

Description:  This Natural Feature Hanger can be used to display an attractive piece of driftwood or other long item.  It’s basically a plant hanger with a few minor adjustments.  You can modify the design by simply adding special features such as beads, shells, pine cones, etc.

This Macrame Pattern was custom designed for Nancy Rutan, who provided the photo when she was finished making the Hanger shown.

Supplies Needed:

  • 6mm Macrame Cord (24+ yards)
  • One 2-inch Ring
  • Driftwood or other item being displayed

Knots used:

Step 1:  Cut 4 strands of cord, each at least 6 yards long.  Apply glue, wax, or tape to the ends to prevent unraveling.  For more information, see Cord Preparation. Cut the cords for the Natural Feature Hanger longer if you want the design to be more than 27 inches in size.

Step 2:  Pass the cords through the ring, folding them in half as you do so.  To make the Linen Stitch, wrap one strand around the others 5 or 6 times. Make a small loop, and pass the end through (Half Hitch).  Choose another cord from the bundle, and do the same, wrapping at least twice to secure the first cord.

Step 3:  You should now have 8 strands to work with. Separate the cords into 4 groups of two cords.  With each group, make a chain of Alternating Half Hitches.   Stop when the chains are 25 inches long.  You can add beads or buttons to embellish them, if you wish.

Tip: You can change the technique slightly, and tie Alternating Double Half Hitches. Simply tie one DHH using one strand, onto the other. Then switch strands and make the same knot. See to Half Hitch Patterns for other options.

Another good technique to use, for the long sennits of the Natural Feature hanger, is the Half Hitch Spiral design.

Step 4:  Arrange the driftwood on your work surface resting horizontally.  Direct two of the strands from one chain under it.  They should be placed approximately 2 to 4 inches from one end.  Attach both strands with Double Half Hitches.

Step 5: Attach the sennit directly across from the one you just used.  It should be placed at the other end of the driftwood.

Step 6:  Repeat the process with the remaining 2 chains.  They should rest 2 inches to either side of the center of the driftwood.

Step 7:  Bring all the strands together underneath the driftwood.  Make the Linen Stitch again, wrapping at least 8 times.  Apply glue to the wrapped area and allow it to dry.  Trim the cords so the ends are even.  Tie a Barrel Knot (or other finishing knot) at the end of each cord

Tip: Add beads, shells, or other items to the ends to embellish the Natural Feature Hanger. Artificial birds and butterflies look great!
