Monkeys Fist

| Description:
The Monkeys Fist is an excellent way to finish off the end
of a cord. You could use it as part of a buttonhole clasp
rather than using a regular button, or to collect a group
of cords to make tassels. |

|
|
Step
1: To practice this interesting knot, obtain a
single cord at least 36 inches long. Use the index and middle
finger of one hand, pointing sideways and slightly spread
open, for the first part of the knot. Wrap the cord three
full turns around your fingers, close to the left end. The
left tail will dangle freely for now. |
|
| |
| Step 2:
Pass the right end through the middle of the cords via the
space between your fingers. You can now take the coils off
of them. Continue to hold the knot though. Next, wrap the
cord three times around the coils you just made in step 1. |
| |
|
|
Step
3: Pass the cord through one of the openings, it
doesn’t matter which. Bring it around the second set
of coils, going through the other opening. Wrap it two additional
times the same way, for a total of three wraps. |
|
| |
| |
|
|
Step 4:
When you are finished, make an Overhand
knot at the end of the tail, and trim the excess. Tuck
this knot into the center of the Monkeys fist. Tighten each
loop gradually until you have a neatly finished knot. |
|
| |
| Tip:
Like all button knots, tightening can be tricky. The first few
times you make this knot, don’t expect the finished product
to be neat. Nylon cord slides a little better than other materials,
so try it with some nylon string the first few times. Also,
it’s easier to make this knot with cord thicker than 2mm. |
