Macrame Charm Bracelet

Charm Bracelet

Description: This Macrame Charm Bracelet pattern uses few knots, so is fairly easy to make. The knots themselves are not all that difficult to tie. This Macrame pattern can become more complex, however, if you choose fine cord, less than 2mm in size. For those of you who are experienced in this craft, try making this bracelet with fine silk cord.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1mm or 2mm cord material (Cotton, Nylon, Hemp, etc.)
  • 3-6 Charms and/or Novelty Buttons
  • 1 Shank-Type Button or Bead, preferably ½ inch diameter
  • Project Board, pins, and tape

Knots used:

Creating the Clasp

Step 1: Cut 1 strand of material, 70 inches long. For 1mm material, cut 7 more strands, each 60 inches long. For 2mm material, cut 3 strands, each 60 inches long. Treat the ends to prevent unraveling.

Step 2: Locate the center point of all the cords, and secure them to your board so they are vertical. Make sure the 70-inch cord is either on the far left (or right), since it will be your working cord. Use one half of it to tie enough Vertical Larks Head knots to make a 1/2-inch sennit. Tie the knots onto the other strands, which work together to form the core. Begin at the center, moving towards the ends.

Turn the sennit around and repeat the process on the opposite side of the center point. Use the other half of the long working cord. Stop when the entire sennit measures 1-inch. If you are using a button or bead larger than 1/2-inch, tie additional knots on both halves, so the clasp for the Macrame Charm Bracelet is a bit larger.

Fold the sennit in half, bringing all the ends together in a group, to form a circular clasp. Tie a Square Knot, using the same two working cords. The other strands are the fillers. Make sure the knot is very tight. You can add glue if you feel it necessary.

Designing the Bracelet

Step 3: Choose the longest strand to be the holding cord throughout the entire Macrame Charm Bracelet pattern. Direct it diagonally, resting on top of the other strands, and secure it so it’s taut. Make a row of Double Half Hitches (DHH) onto the holding cord, using the other strands.

Step 4: Repeat step 3, with the holding cord running diagonally in the opposite direction.

Step 5: Add a decorative charm or novelty button to the holding cord, and make another row of diagonal DHH. Go back the other direction again, as in step 4.

If you wish, you can add the charms to both sides Just be sure to attach them after the row of DHH is complete.

Keep repeating this pattern until you are happy with the size of the Macrame charm bracelet.

Finishing Touches

Step 6: Tie a Square Knot with the 2 outside strands, around the other cords, which are the fillers. Add the Button for the clasp, sliding it onto 2 of the fillers. Use those two strands as the new working cords, tying another SK just below the button or bead. Apply glue to both knots. When dry, cut off any remaining material.
