Lacy Falls Hanger

  Lacy Falls Hanger

Description:  The Lacy Falls Hanger is a stunningly beautiful design that will make your family and friends take real notice.  It features long flowing Tassels and Fringe that are very elegant.

Macrame Plant Hangers do not need to be plain old dust collectors.  They can be attractive additions in any room of your home.

This project is rated Moderate, and will be easier to make if you know how to tie the decorative knots used.

The Lacy Falls Hanger has an an appropriate size cradle for 12-inch diameter pots.

The finished height is approximately 7 feet tall (includes fringe).

Supplies Needed:

  • 6mm Nylon Cord, Twisted Style (300 yards)
  • One 2-inch Ring
  • Four 7-inch Rings
  • 22 x 32mm Oval Beads (16)

Knots Used:

Cutting Instructions:

  • Cut 24 strands, each 9 yards long
  • Cut 8 strands, each 4 yards long
  • Cut 1 cord, 3 yards long
  • Cut 18 cords, each 2 yards long (72 inches)
  • Cut 5 cords, each 1 yard long (36 inches)

Prepare the ends of the 9 and 4-yard cords with tape, to prevent unraveling as you tie the knots.

Creating the Top Section

Step 1:  Place the 9-yard cords on your table so the centers are all matched.  Place the 4-yard cords on top of them, also matching the centers.  It’s best if the cords rest vertically for this step.

Step 2:  Take a 2-yard cord and place it under the bundle of strands, so it’s horizontal.  It should be folded in half and placed 1 inch away from the center of the cords.

Use it to tie a sennit of Square Knots measuring 2 inches, around the long cords, which are the fillers.  The sennit should have equal amounts of knots on either side of the center point, so it’s balanced.

Step 3:  Place the cords through the 2-inch ring, so the center of the sennit rests at the bottom of it.  Fold the sennit, making sure it’s balanced.

Use a 3-yard cord to make a Wrapped Knot around all the cords, including the one used to make the sennit.  Make this knot 3 inches long.

Step 4:  Apply glue to the Wrapped Knot and allow it to dry.  Cut off the excess from the cord used to make the knot, as well as the one used to make the SK sennit.  Be very careful not to cut the long 4-yard and 9-yard cords.

Step 5:  Attach all the cords to a 7-inch ring with Double Half Hitches.  Place them on the ring so you have 12 long cords, followed by 4 short ones, alternating them all the way around the ring.

Tip: This process is easier if you hang up the Lacy Falls Hanger by the small ring before you get started.  Also, passing each of the cords into the larger ring before tying the DHH will help, too.  This way the cord starts out by going under the ring.

Step 6:  Tie 3 rows of Alternating Square Knots.  The first row should rest directly below the ring.

Step 7:  Attach all the cords to another 7-inch ring with DHH.

Step 8:  Divide the cords into groups of either short or long strands, so there are four in each group (two working cords and two fillers).

Start with the short strands (4-yard).  Tie the Spiral Stitch in each group, measuring 3 inches.  Place a bead over the filler cords.  Continue the Spiral Stitch for another 3 inches.

Step 9: Repeat step 8 using the long strands next. When you are finished, attach all the cords to another 7-inch ring, with DHH.  Make sure the spiral sennits are pulled taut so they don’t bend or overlap. Make sure the Lacy Falls Hanger rests evenly when you are finished.

Step 10:  Repeat step 6.  Next, attach all the cords to the last ring with DHH.

Step 11:  Using only the short cords, tie 3-inch Spiral Stitch sennits using four strands per group.  You may need to switch cords so you use the longest ones to tie the knots.

Step 12:  Bring all the short cords together.  Use a 1-yard cord to make a Wrapped Knot around them, measuring approximately 2 inches.  Apply a light coat of glue to the knot and allow it to dry.  Cut off the excess from the cord used to make the knot.

Trim the remaining short strands so they are even.  Unravel each cord and brush the fibers until they are smooth and soft. This is the most important feature of the Lacy Falls Hanger, so take your time.

Designing the Long Sennits (Middle Section)

Step 13: Only the long strands should be left to create the sennits making up the middle of the Lacy Falls Hanger.  Divide them up into 4 groups of 12 cords.  Mentally number them 1 thru 12.  Complete the following steps in each group:

Step A: Tie 7 rows of ASK.

Step B: Use cords 3 thru 6 and 7 thru 10 to tie the Spiral Stitch.  Stop when it is 2 inches long.

Step C:  Tie 5 rows of ASK.

Step D:  Repeat step B.

Step E:  Tie the Spiral Stitch with cords 1 – 4, 5 – 8, and 9 – 12.  Stop when it is 3 inches long.

Step F:  Repeat Step B, followed by Step C.

Step G:  Repeat Step B, followed by Step A.

Making the Bottom Section and Cradle

Step 14: Take 4 of the 2-yard cords and fold them in half.  Pass them through a space in the last row of ASK made in the previous step.  Try to place them near the knot made with cords 5 thru 8 (middle).

Use a 1-yard cord and make a Wrapped Knot around the folded cords.  It should be around 1 to 2 inches long.  This creates the first Tassel for the Lacy Falls Hanger.

Step 15:  Repeat step 14, making the tassels with 4 more 2-yard cords, onto the other three sennits. Don’t brush them out yet.

Step 16:  Go back to the final row of ASK you made in step 13.  Take 2 cords from one sennit, near the edge, and combine it with two more from the next sennit over.

Move down 2 ½ inches and tie 2 Square Knots with the four ends.

Do this with the cords in the remaining three sennits, too, creating the cradle for the plant pot.  If you wish, you can alternate the cords and tie another row of SK, making the cradle deeper.

Step 17:  Bring all the cords together except for the ones that you added in steps 14 and 15 (Tassels).  Secure the bundle with a scrap cord.  Place the pot in the cradle if you can, or measure to make sure it fits.

Remove the scrap cord and use the last 2-yard cord to make a tight Wrapped Knot, so it rests directly under the pot, and is centered. Apply glue and allow it to dry.  Cut off the excess from the short cord only.

Finishing Touches

Step 18:  Trim, unravel, and brush all the Tassels as well as the fringe until they are smooth and stylish.  Take your time so the entire appearance of your Lacy Falls Hanger will be elegant and beautiful to show and enjoy for years to come.
