Josephine Necklace

Josphine Necklace

Description: The Josephine Necklace is designed to be feminine and delicate. I recommend you make it with soft cord so it is as much a pleasure to wear, as it is to look at. Be sure to choose pastel colors and attractive beads to enhance the feminine appearance of this Micro-Macrame necklace.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1mm - 2mm Cotton, Nylon, or Silk cord.
  • Beads: (32) “E” Beads, (8) Round beads, (1) Pendant
  • Button for Clasp
  • Project Board and Pins

Designing the Clasp

Step 1: Cut 3 strands of material, one of them 60 inches long, and two strands 120 inches long. Be sure to prepare the ends before beginning. Apply a small piece of tape or use pins to secure them to your Project Board. They should be vertical, directly in front of you.

  Buttonhole Clasp for the Necklace

Step 2: Fold the cords in half. The short strand should be on the outside. Use one portion of the 60-inch strand as your working cord to make the Buttonhole Clasp for the Josephine Necklace. Place it in the center of the cords. Tie the Square knot to complete it, so the short cords tie the knot and the long ones are the fillers. Secure the clasp to your work surface with tape or pins.

Creating the Necklace Design

Step 3: Tie 3 Square Knots just below the clasp, just like the one you made in step 2 (four fillers). Make the knots tight, and apply glue. Let it dry for a while before continuing. Cut off the 2 short ends (60-inch), close to the knot.

Step 4: Take three of the remaining ends and secure them to the table so they have tension (fillers). Use the remaining long strand and tie a Josephine Knot. As you design it, make sure you go around the fillers at least once.

Note: If you prefer, you can make the Josephine Knots with 2 cords working together, and secure only two, to be used as the fillers.

Step 5: Adjust the coils of the Josephine Knot, and tie a Square knot just below using all 4 stands. Add small beads, and tie another Square knot.

Step 6: Repeat steps 4 and 5 until you have 5 Josephine knots. Add a larger, round bead, passing it over all 4 cords. Tie a Square knot just below the bead to secure it.

Step 7: Repeat step 6, after you switch the cords around, so that the working cords become fillers and vice-versa. This will give you extra material to work with.

Step 8: For this next section, you’ll tie only 2 Josephine Knots, with a round bead after each one. Remember, you can vary the pattern any way you wish, especially with regards to the beads. Also, remember that there needs to be a Square knot before and after each bead.

Adding the Pendant

Use and Attractive Pendant   Step 9: Pass ALL the strands through the loop on the pendant. Tie a Square Knot.

Now reverse the steps above, so the opposite side of the necklace is the same as what you just designed. Remember to include the three Square Knots (Step 3), before adding the button for the clasp.

Finishing Touches

Step 10: When you get to the end of the Josephine Necklace, slide all four ends through the shank of the button. Tie a Barrel Knot to secure them. Trim the ends close to the knot, and apply glue. You can adjust the coils of the Josephine Knots to make them more uniform, if you wish.
