Jade Necklace |
| |
| |
Description: The Jade Necklace features a continuous diamond design made with Double Half Hitches. The rich jade green material and copper or brown beads add contrast and appeal. This is a Y-necklace, which does not have a clasp. It needs to be made large enough to fit over the head.
For that reason, this Micro-Macrame pattern is written for a 30-inch size. To make it a different size, simply cut the strands 4 times the length you want to end up with. |

| Supplies Needed: |
| |
- 1mm Hemp, Cotton, or Nylon cord (36 yards)
- 8 round beads, 10 to 12mm in size
- Project Board and Pins

| Knots Used: |

| |
| |
Start by cutting 10 cords, each 3.5 yards long. Prepare the ends with glue and allow it to dry completely.
Note: In the images below, the holding cords are darker to help you understand these steps better. I recommend you LABEL the two holding cords, since they will be the same color as the others, and you need to be able to tell the difference between them. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 1: Arrange the cords on your project board vertically. Find the center of them, mark that point with a piece of tape. Mentally number the strands 1 thru 10, moving left to right. Cords 5 and 6 will be the holding cords throughout the entire Jade Necklace design. |
| |
| |
Step 2: Place a pin between cords 5 and 6. Just below, crisscross those two strands, so cord 6 heads left and cord 5 heads right. |
| |
Tip: The angle of these holding cords is important, as they will determine the shape of the diamonds. You can make the diamonds either narrow or wide, depending on how you secure the holding conrds. Once you have the strands arranged to your liking, secure them with pins so they are taut. |
| |
| |
Step 3: Take cord 4 and attach it to the holding cord on the left (cord 6), by tying one Half Hitch. Tighten it so it rests near the tape. Then tie another Half Hitch next to the first, with cord 4. Both steps equal one Double Half Hitch. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 4: Attach cord 3 to the same holding cord. with a Double Half Hitch (DHH). Do the same with cord 2, then cord 1. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 5: Attach cords 7 thru 10 to holding cord 5 (on the right) with Double Half Hitches.
This completes the top half of the first diamond in your Jade Necklace. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 6: Direct the left holding cord (6) back towards the center to form the left bottom half of the diamond. Secure it at the bend on the left, with a pin. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 7: Attach cords 1 - 4 to holding cord 6, in that order, with DHH.
This way you start with the cord you ended with in the left upper portion of the diamond (cord 1). |
| |
| |
| |
Step 8: Direct holding cord 5 back towards the center to form the right bottom half of the diamond. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 9: Attach cords 10 - 7 to holding cord 5 with DHH, in that order. |
| |
| |
Step 10: To complete the first diamond for your Jade Necklace, make a Double Half Hitch with one holding cord onto the other. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 11: Using the same holding cords, make another diamond, following step 1 - 10. You do not need to crisscross the holding cords as you begin. |
| |
| |
Step 12: Add a bead by sliding cords 5 and 6 through the hole. Then make 2 more diamonds, following steps 1 thru 10.
Repeat this step a few more times, until the first half of the necklace measures 15 inches long (or half the completed size, if you made changes to the length).
Step 13: Go back to the center of the cords. Use the opposite half of the strands, and repeat steps 1 thru 12. Stop when the entire Jade necklace is 30 inches long, or is the length you need. |
| |
Adding the Pendant |
| |
Step 14: Secure the Jade Necklace to your board, so the ends come together where the pendant will rest. There still should be two distinct groups consisting of 5 cords each. Take one group and tie a Half Hitch around the other group.
Step 15: Direct one cord from each group through the hole in the pendant (total of 2 strands). If the hole is large enough, you can pass more strands through it, only make sure you are taking them from both groups equally.
I used an Asian pendant to make the Jade necklace shown at the top of the page. Since it had a hole in the center, I simply passed the ends through it from front to back, then tied a Half Hitch. If the hole in the pendant you are using is sideways, direct the strands through it in opposite directions.
Once the pendant for the Jade Necklace is resting the way you want it, make sure the ends are pointed towards the necklace (not the pendant). They can head in opposite directions, or the same direction. |
| |
| |
| |
Step 17: Cut 1 cord, 18 inches long. Use it to make a Wrapped Knot around ALL the strands, making sure it passes over the Half Hitch you made in Step 14. It will be sideways in comparison to the necklace, which is indicated by the arrow in this image. Make the knot as tight as possible.
Apply glue to the wrapped area, and allow it to dry. Cut off the excess material. |
