Step 1: Cut a 6-inch piece of craft wire and place it through the top hole of the Liberty Bell. Make a ring approximately ¾ inch in diameter. Circle the end around the ring once to make it more sturdy. Cut off any excess.
Step 2: Cut three cords of both colors, each 4 yards long. Prepare the ends with tape, wax, or glue to prevent unraveling.
Step 3: Pass the cords through the ring in the Liberty bell and center them, folding them in half in the process. Cut one 36-inch cord and use it to make a Wrapped Knot around all the long strands. Cut off any excess. |
| |
| Step 4: Organize the cords into the following groups: |
| |
| 4 Color A –-- 2 Color A --- 2 Color B –-- 4 Color B |
| |
The 4 cords in the center are the holding cords, and the other 2 groups are the working cords. The 4 strands act together as if they were one cord. |
| |
Step 5: Tie a pattern of Alternating Half Hitches onto the holding cords. If you need ideas, see Half Hitch Patterns. As you work, make sure the Holiday Bell Pull lies flat on your board. Secure the knots as you progress. Stop when the sennit is 15 to 17 inches long.
Step 6: Divide the cords into 2 groups, color A and color B. Select two of the longest strands as the new working cords. They will be used to cover the ring. The rest will be fillers.
Step 7: The ring and fillers will work together to hold the knots. Start at the bottom and work towards the top. Using the working cord on the right, tie Larks Head knots to cover one half of the ring.
Step 8: Do the same with the left working cord, to cover the opposite half of the ring. |
| |
Step 9: At the top, tie a tight Square Knot with the 2 working cords only. The knot should rest in the back of the ring, so it can’t be seen. Apply glue to the knots and allow it to dry before cutting off any remaining cord.
Step 10: Add the decorations to the Holiday Bell Pull, by attaching them with small pieces of craft wire. |
