Heart Ornament

Heart Ornament

Description:  This Heart Ornament is a great craft project for kids and beginners. It can easily be made smaller, and used in jewelry designs, as a bookmark, or a key ring. It can also be used to decorate other Macrame projects, such as banners, mobiles, and wreaths.  This pattern is written for a 5-inch size Heart, so it can be used as a holiday ornament.  To make it smaller, simply use more delicate cord material (2mm to 4mm).

You can click on the small images below, and larger ones will come up in a new window.

Supplies Needed:

  • 6mm Macrame Cord (11 yards)
  • Project Board and Pins

Knots Used:

Step 1:  Cut 6 cords, each 45 inches long.  Cut 3 cords, each 36 inches long.

  Reverse Larks Head in Center

Step 2:  Take two of the 45-inch strands and secure them to your board, horizontally.  One should be on top of the other.   Next, take a 36-inch cord, and attach it to both of these strands, using a Reverse Larks Head knot. Make sure it's in the center of the 45-inch cords.

Step 3:  Turn the design around, so that all four portions of the 45-inch cords are vertical, and heading downward. These are now working cords, and will be used to tie the knots inside the Heart Ornament.

  Turn the Design as Shown

The ends of the 36-inch strand should be horizontal, and arranged so one portion is heading left, and the other right.  Secure the two ends of the 36-inch strand to the board, and mentally label it the “holding cord”.

  Mount Additional Cords

Step 4: Fold two of the remaining 45-inch cords in half, and attach them to the left portion of the holding cord with Reverse Larks Head knots.

Take two more 45-inch cords, and attach them the same way, to the right portion of the holding cord.

  Larks Head + Half Hitch

Step 5: Take two of the 36-inch cords, and attach one to each portion of the holding cord, as you did in step 4, with Reverse Larks head knots.  Make an extra Half Hitch with each half of these new working cords.

Push all the knots towards the first one in the center of the Heart Ornament, if you have not already done so.

Step 6:  Mentally number the all strands coming from the holding cord 1 – 16, moving left to right.  Do not include the ends of the holding cord when you number the strands, and don't use the holding cord in this step.

Tie the rows of Alternating Square Knots as follows:

Row 1:  Tie a Square Knot using cords 3 – 6 (two working cords, two fillers).  Tie another one using cords 11 – 14.  Pull these knots tight so that the holding cord curves to form the proper shape at the top of the heart.

Row 2:  Tie the next row of ASK using cords 1 – 4, 5 – 18, 9 – 12, and 13 – 16.  Pull these knots tight, too, and shape the top of the heart ornament as you progress.

Row 3:  Tie ASK with cords 3 – 6, 7 – 10, and 11 – 14.

Row 4:  Tie the next row of Alternating Square Knots using cords 1 – 4,
5 – 8, 9 – 12, and 13 – 16.  Curve this row of knots upward slightly at each end.

Row 5: Tie the ASK using cords 3 – 6, 7 – 10, and 11 – 14.

Row 6: Tie the ASK using cords 5 – 8 and 9 – 12.

Row 7: Tie the final ASK using cords 7 – 10.

Step 7:  Locate the holding cord again, and attach cords 1 – 8 to the left half of it.  Attach cords 16 – 9 to the right half, in that order.  Use Double Half Hitches to attach the strands.

Step 8:  To make the point at the bottom of the Heart Ornament, take one half of the holding cord and attach it to the other half, with a DHH.

Step 9:  Trim all the strands so they are neat, and glue them to the back of the heart.  If you wish, you can weave them through the back of some of the knots to hold them in place better.

Pass a piece of scrap cord, or craft wire through a portion of the Heart Ornament, and it's ready to be used as a holiday decoration.
