Half Hitch Bracelet

Half Hitch Bracelet

Description:  This Half Hitch Bracelet is unique in the fact that it has a subtle striped appearance because you’re using 2 colors.  The width of this interesting Micro-Macrame bracelet is dependant on the size of the cord you are using.  The thicker the material, the wider the bracelet will end up.  Emily Storm Bligh sent in the suggestion for this easy Macrame pattern.

You can click on any of the small images and larger ones will show up in a new window.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1mm to 4mm Macrame Cord (Cotton, Nylon, Rattail, Hemp)
  • Project Board and pins
  • Fabric Glue that dries clear

Knots Used:

Cutting and Preparing Cords

Cut 2 cords, each 72 inches long (one of each color)
Cut 1 holding cord 25 inches long
Cut 1 cord, 18 inches long (for clasp)

Prepare the ends so they don’t unravel as you work with them. You can use glue that has been thinned with water, or melted wax, to coat the ends.

Mounting Process

Step 1:  Lay the 25-inch cord in front of you, horizontally.  Secure it to your board so it’s taut.  It will be the holding cord throughout the pattern.

Step 2: Take one 72-inch cord and lay it under the holding cord so it’s vertical.  This is the first working cord, and should be mentally labeled “Color A”.  The center of it should line up with the holding cord, and be resting approximately 8 inches from the left end of it.

Cross Pin Technique   Tip: Since I used Satin Cord to make this Half Hitch Bracelet, I did not put the pins through it. Instead, I used the Cross Pin Technique. I recommend you become familiar with this method of securing cords.

  Double Half Hitch

Step 3:  Take the lower portion of the strand and make a Double Half Hitch.  To do this, you bring the end up and over the holding cord, coming down slightly to the left. Make a second knot the same way.

  DHH with Top Portion

Step 4:  Take the top half of the same cord, and make a DHH, just like you did in step 3.  You can either turn the board around, or tie the knot upside down, as in the image.

Step 5:  Add the second strand to the holding cord, by attaching it with one DHH. Mentally label it “Color B”.  Use only the lower half to make the knot, following the instructions in step 3. Make sure the ends are straight, and heading vertically, after tying the knot. This completes the mounting process for the Half Hitch Bracelet.

Creating the Half Hitch Pattern

Single Half Hitch with Lower Portion   Step 6:  Go back to the lower portion of the Color A cord you worked with in step 2.  Direct the cord so it passes under the end of the Color B strand, heading from left to right.  Tie a single Half Hitch onto the holding cord, to the right of the other knots.

Single Half Hitch with Top Portion   Step 7: Now use the top portion to make a single Half Hitch. You can turn the whole board around, or tie it upside down. Make sure both knots are resting next to one another, with no gap between them.

Step 8:  Repeat steps 6 and 7 with the Color B cord.

Step 9:  Continue on, repeating steps 6 and 7 over and over, alternating between the two colors.  Be sure you are tying single Half Hitches.  Stop when the Half Hitch bracelet is approximately 1 inch shorter than your wrist size.  The last cord used should be Color B

Step 10:  Take the lower portion of the Color A cord and make a Double Half Hitch onto the holding cord.  Do the same with the upper portion.

Direct the ends of the working cords to the back of the Half Hitch bracelet.  Trim them as needed, and apply fabric glue to hold them in place.  If you wish, you can try to weave them through the back of the knots to secure them.

Sliding Clasp

Step 11:  To make the sliding clasp, form a circle with the bracelet.  The ends of the holding cords should be heading in opposite directions.  Take the 18-inch cord and tie a Wrapped Knot around them.   There should be about 2 inches of space between the last Half Hitch and the Wrapped Knot.  Tighten the knot firmly.

See Sliding Clasps for other types of knots that can be used instead of the Wrapped Knot.

Pull on the ends of the Half Hitch Bracelet to make sure it slides open and closed properly. Cut off the excess material from the strand used to make the Wrapped knot, NOT the holding cords.

Trim the ends of the holding cord to approximately 4 inches, measuring from the Wrapped Knot. Tie tight Barrel Knots in the ends to prevent them from sliding out of the clasp.  If you prefer, you can add beads, followed by a Barrel knot.
