Fringed Curtain

Fringed Curtain

Description:  This Fringed Curtain features both V shapes and diamond patterns at the top. Most Macrame Curtains are made in panels, and for this design each panel measures approximately 6 to 8 inches wide.  The length of the window will determine how long the fringe needs to be.  Try applying beads to the dangling cords to embellish this basic design. UPDATED 10/09

Supplies Needed:

  • 4mm Braided or Twisted style Cord
  • 1 Tension Rod
  • Beads for each panel, preferably 1-inch long Barrel Beads

Knots Used:

CUTTING AND PREPARING CORDS

Use this formula to figure out how many cords needed:

Width of window in inches, multiplied by 2 = number of cords needed
(The number needs to be a multiple of 8, such as 56 or 64)

Length of window in inches x 6 = length of each cord

To get the total amount of cord needed for this project, mulitiply the number of cords by the length.

Prepare the cords for the Fringed Curtain by applying tape, glue or wax to the ends to prevent unraveling.  See Cord Preparation for more details.

Section 1

Step 1:  Attach all the cords to the curtain rod with Larks Head Knots, folding them in half in the process.  This doubles the amount of cords available. Organize the cords into groups of 16 strands. You’ll work with one group at a time.

Step 2:  Tie the first row of the Alternating V Pattern using 4 strands per knot. There should be 2 working cords and 2 fillers per knot.

Step 3:  Mentally number the cords 1 thru 16.  Use cords 3 thru 14 to make the next row of SK.  There will be 3 knots in this row.

Step 4:  For the next row, use cords 5 thru 12.  There will be a total of 2 SK.

Step 5:  Tie 1 Square Knot with cords 7 thru 10.

Bead Placement for Section 1   Step 6:  Add a bead to strands 8 and 9.  Repeat step 5.

Step 7:  Repeat steps 2 thru 6 with the other groups of cords, to make several more V designs for the Fringed Curtain.

Section 2

Step 8:  Mentally number the strands from the first 2 groups on the left, 1 thru 32.  Slide a bead over cords 16 and 17.  Tie a SK just below it, using cords 15 thru 18.

Step 9:  Tie the next row of SK with cords 13 thru 16 for one knot, and 17 thru 20 for the second knot.

Step 10:  The third row of SK should be tied using cords 11 thru 22, for a total of 3 knots.

Step 11:  Repeat step 9.

Step 12:  Tie the final knot of the “diamond” shape with cords 15 thru 18.

Step 13:  Slide a bead onto cords 16 & 17, followed by a SK using cords 15 thru 18.

Bead Placement After Both Sections Finished

Step 14:  Repeat steps 8 thru 13 for the other groups.  The diamond shapes will all be nestled in between the V designs.

The image shows the Fringed Curtain with both Sections 1 and 2.

Finishing the Fringe

Step 15:  Trim all the ends so they are even.  In every strand, tie 5 to 10 Stevedore Knots, spaced evenly along the cord.

Step 16:  Tie the Matthew Walker knots at the ends of each of the cords.  You’ll need to unravel the cords slightly to make this finishing knot.  If you prefer, you can use a Barrel knot instead, and cut off the excess.
