Figure 8 Bracelet

Figure 8 Bracelet

Description: This Figure 8 Bracelet features both the Celtic Vertical Figure 8 Pattern as well as the Celtic Button Knot, both rarely used in handcrafted jewelry. It’s fairly easy to make, but you should review the knots before you get started. In the photos, I used Satin Rattail cord, which gives this fashionable bracelet its beautiful sheen.

Supplies Needed:
  • 2mm Satin Rattail Cord, or similar material
  • Small round beads with holes large enough to admit 1 cord
  • Decorative Button for clasp
  • Project Board and Pins

Knots Used: Figure 8 Pattern (Vertical), Celtic Button Knot, Square Knot
Barrel Twist Clasp and the Overhand Knot.

Step 1: Cut 1 strand of cord, 72 inches long. Cut 2 strands, each
36 inches long. Prepare the ends in some manner to prevent fray, but don’t use tape.

Step 2: Start the Vertical Figure 8 Pattern approx. 12 inches from one end of the long cord. The key to success with this pattern is to make sure the end passes under the cord when completing each loop. Securing one loop prior to making the next one will give you some control. The loops should be small, so that the height of the pattern is 1 inch in size. You don't want the Figure 8 Bracelet to be too wide on your wrist.

Step 3: Add the beads after every third Figure 8. Make the chain approximately 4 inches long, or so that it fits completely across the top of your wrist and begins to wrap around.

Step 4: Add one of the 36-inch cords to one end. Pass it through the bottom loop top to bottom, and the top loop the opposite direction. Adjust it so the ends are even, and tie 2 tight Square Knots, taking care not to deform the Figure 8 shape. It helps to pin the loops to the board prior to tying the knot.

Step 5: Push the new strands aside for now. Tie a Celtic Button Knot with the “tail” of the long cord you were using. Tighten it so it rests right next to the second Square knot made in step 4.

Step 6: Use the 2 new strands to tie 2 more Square Knots just below the Button Knot.

Step 7: Use the same 2 strands and tie an Overhand knot, catching in the “tail” of the long cord. Before tightening, apply glue to the tail. Make the knot as tight as you can. When dry, cut off any remaining portion of the “tail”, NOT the 2 new strands.

Step 8: Add the button for the clasp to the 2 strands. Secure it with either a tight Overhand Knot or Square Knot (no fillers), whichever you prefer. Apply glue to the knot, and when dry, cut off any remaining cord.

Step 9: At the other end of the Figure 8 Bracelet design, add the other 36-inch cord in the same manner as you did in step 4.

Step 10: Repeat steps 5 through 7.

Step 11: Make the Barrel Twist Clasp slightly larger than the button at the other end. Secure the clasp with a tight Square Knot (no fillers). Apply glue to the knot, and when dry, cut off any remaining cord.
