Dragonfly Design

Dragonfly Barrettes

Description: This Dragonfly Design is really pretty if you make it with ribbon or lace. Add them to barrettes, shoes, hair clips, and clothes. They would make a perfect gift for someone who likes dragonflies. You could also use this simple design as part of a bracelet or belt. Try using this Macrame pattern to make a bookmark or as decoration for a gift.

This pattern might be a bit challenging for younger children. You can click on the images and a large picture will come up in a new window.

Supplies Needed:

  • Cord: 2mm – 4mm Macramé Cord or similar material.
  • (2) Beads (optional)
  • 1 pair of Barrettes

Knots Used: Overhand Knot, single & chain

Step 1: Cut one cord, at least 60 inches long.

Designing the Head and Body

First Overhand Knot   Step 2: Fold the cord in half and tape it to the table. Using the left end, make an Overhand Knot. You should tie it in a counter-clockwise circle as you bring the end around and through the loop. Don’t tighten it yet.

Linking Two Knots   Step 3: Now take the right strand and make another Overhand Knot, this time, in a clockwise direction. Pass the end through the loop of the first knot. You’ll come into it from below. This will link the two together.

Creating the Wings

Tightening and Creating The Wings   Step 4: To make the Wings of the Dragonfly Design, first take a good look at the two knots you just made. The Overhand knot is a circle, with both an inner and outer part. Locate the inner section, where the two knots connect. Pull the inner part of the left knot through the outer section of the right knot.

Do the same for the other wing, but in reverse. The innter right loop needs to be pulled through the outer left loop. As you pull, the knot will tighten. Adjust the loops so they are both the same size. Be sure to leave the small loop up top for the head.

Step 5: Using the two dangling ends, make a second set of wings the same way. Then tie a third pair just below the second ones.

Tail Section and Finishing Touches

Step 6: Make a chain of Overhand knots, so they end up right next to each other, forming the tail. Add a bead after 3 are tied. Then make 3 more.

Step 7: To finish, attach another bead, and tie a tight Overhand Knot just below it. If you can, feed the ends back through it. If not, just cut the leftover cord close to the knot. Apply glue so it won’t come out. The Dragonfly Design can now be attached to whatever item you are decorating.
