Cornucopia Decoration

Cornucopia Decoration

Description: This Cornucopia Decoration is easy to make, and sure to make a big hit with your guests. You can use this unique Macramé item as a party favor, table decoration, or on the mantle of a fireplace. I came up with the design when I needed a special decoration for a Church Thanksgiving Dinner.

Supplies Needed:
  • One 2-inch Ring, preferably plastic
  • 4mm Cord or Thick Yarn in Fall colors

Knots Used: Larks Head Knot, Wrapped Knot, Alternating Square Knots,
Half Hitch

Step 1: Cut 2 cords, each 60 inches long. Cut 14 or 16 cords, each 40 inches long. You may need to adjust the number of cords cut, depending on the type of cord you are using. The number of strands available after the mounting process needs to be a multiple of 4, which is why you need 14 or 16, not 15 or 13, etc.

Step 2: Mount each of the 40-inch cords to the ring using a Larks Head Knot. Then add a Half Hitch with both strands, to either side of the main knot. Continue this process until the entire ring is covered.

Step 3: Tie a row of Square knots with groups of 4 strands (2 fillers), just below the mounting knots. Alternate the cords, and tie another row of knots.

Step 4: Separate 8 cords along one side of the ring. This will be the “top” of the Cornucopia design. Secure these cords away from the others for now. With the remaining cords, tie 4 more rows of Alternating Square Knots.

Step 5: You’ll use the separated cords next. Mentally number the cords 1 thru 8. Pass cord #1 through a space along the edge of the Alternating knots made in the previous step. Then tie a Square knot, using cords 1 thru 4.

Step 6: Use cord #8, passing it through a space on the opposite edge, just as you did in the previous step. Tie a Square knot using cords 5 thru 8.

Step 7: Use cords 4 and 5 next. Select 2 strands from the “bottom” section, and tie a Square knot, using cords 4 and 5 as fillers. When you are finished, the ring for the Cornucopia Decoration should rest on an angle.

Step 8: Use one 60-inch cord and make a Wrapped knot around all the strands. Begin the wraps close to the previous knots tied.

Step 9: When finished, cut off 75% of the cords, just beyond the wrapped portion. Use the second cord, and make another Wrapped knot. Start the knot on top of the last ½ inch of the previous wrap, and continuing past the cut cords. Make the wraps as tight as you can, so the design comes to a rounded point at the end.

Step 10: You can either cut off the remaining cord, or trim them to ½ inch and unravel the strands. To encourage the design to curve, tie small pieces of thread around the wrapped portion and pass them through openings close to the ring. Tie Square Knots to secure. To embellish the Cornucopia Decoration, attach silk leaves, artificial fruit, feathers, buttons, or beads.
