Chunky Key Ring

Chunky Key Ring

Description: This Chunky Key Ring is so thick and colorful, you will be able to find your keys very quickly. It’s constructed with thick yarn rather than Macramé cord. When choosing colors, make sure they are bold and bright. Try changing the pattern by using different knots for the bottom half, or use regular macrame cord instead of yarn.

Supplies Needed:

  • Cord: Any type of thick yarn or Macrame cord
  • 4 Macramé Beads made of wood

Knots Used:

Creating the Clasp

Overhand Knot with Both Strands   Step 1: Cut 2 pieces of yarn, each 36 inches long. Make an Overhand Knot in the center, using both strands together. Tape or pin the knot to your table surface, so you have 4 strands to work with.

Step 2: Tie a Square Knot approx. 1 inch below the Overhand knot, using all 4 cords. Two strands will be fillers.

Square Knot Button   Step 3: Move down another ½ inch, and make a chain of 3 or 4 Square Knots. Pass the ends through the space to make the Button. Be sure to direct the ends to either side of the fillers. Switch strands so the shorter cords are the fillers. Tie another Square Knot just below the Button, to secure it in place.

Making the Band

Square Knot Chain   Step 4: Make a chain of Square Knots until you are happy with the length. If you wish, you can use a different type of knot to vary the pattern. Try a Half Hitch Pattern, the Basket Stitch, or the Spiral Stitch.

Finishing Touches

Overhand Knot Below Bead   Step 5: If you wish to decorate the Chunky Key Ring with beads, add them to the ends.. Make a tight Overhand knot just below each bead. Apply glue to secure it, after cutting off the leftover cord. If not using beads, make an Overhand Knot using all the strands together.

To attach the keys: Pass the Overhand Knot you tied in step 1 through the ring, stopping at the Button. Then pass the Button through the 1-inch opening just below the Overhand knot, wrapping it around the ring as you do so. It should hold together. If not, you can apply glue to keep it secure.
