Christmas Candle
|
| |
|
| |
Description:
This Christmas Candle design is based on the traditional
celebration of the holiday. Throughout the world, many people
celebrate the birth and life of Jesus Christ in December
of every year. The white candle is a symbol of His purity
and love for all mankind. The Evergreen Wreath reminds us
that God’s love for us is eternal. This knowledge
is our greatest treasure, symbolized by the Gold Flowers.
The Christmas Candle looks great as a small table decoration,
or on the mantle of a fireplace.

Knots
Used:
|
| |
| |
Step 1:
Cut the cords as follows:
- White – Two 65-inch strands
- Red - Ten 30-inch strands
- Green – Ten 60-inch strands
- Gold Cord – One 10-inch strand
and four 12-inch strands
- Gold Lace – Two 36-inch strands
|
| |
| |
Making the Candle |
| |
| Step 2:
Using the two white strands,
make a Lanyard Knot. Adjust it so it is ¾ inches wide.
Make several more knots on top of the first one, forming a
“stacked” chain. Stop when the design is 12 inches tall. |
| |
| Step 3:
Tie a tight Overhand Knot with each end, close to the other
knots. Apply glue and allow it to dry, then cut off any remaining
cord. This portion of the design is the bottom of the candle,
and will fit inside the ring, later on in the pattern. |
| |
| Step 4:
Move to the other end of the design. Feed the 10-inch gold
cord through the knot on the top. Tie 4 to 6 Alternating Half
Hitches. Next, tie an Overhand Knot. Trim the end down to
a ¾-inch length. Separate the strands making up the
cord and brush until fluffy. Put the finished candle aside
for now. |
| |
| |
Designing the Flowers |
| |
| |
 |
Step
5: To make one of the flowers for the Christmas
candle, make an Overhand knot in the center of a 12-inch
gold cord. Don’t tighten it. Slip one piece of gold
lace, and another gold cord through the
knot, adjusting them so they are centered. Tighten the OH
knot. |
|
| |
| |
 |
Step
6: Secure the knotted portion to your work surface.
Move the 2 strands of the OH knot out of the way. You’ll
use only the lace and gold cords running
through the center of the OH knot (step
5). The gold cords are the fillers, and the lace will make
the knots. Make 4 Square Knot Picots, so there is 1 inch
of space between each one. |
|
| |
| |
 |
Step 7: Fold
the design in half. Make a tight Square Knot with the 2 strands
at the top, around the 4 strands you just
used in step 6. If you wish, you can tie a second one. Cut
off any remaining lace. |
|
| |
| Step 8:
Repeat Steps 5 through 7 to make the second flower. |
| |
| |
Evergreen Wreath Design |
| |
| |
 |
Step
9: Now it’s time to work on the Evergreen
Wreath base for the Christmas candle. Attach each of the
Red strands to the ring with Larks Head knots. Right beside
it, tie a Half Hitch with each end, onto the ring. To make
the "leaves', add a green cord to 2 of the red strands,
with a Square Knot. Position it so it rests close to the
head of the Larks Head. |
|
| |
| TIP: The
best way to add cords is to secure the center of them directly
under the strands they will be attached to. Then tie a Square
Knot, using the new strands as the working cords. You can also make an Overhand knot in the center of
the cord to be added, but avoid tightening it. Pass the strands
already mounted through the knot, and tighten. |
| |
| Step 10:
Make a series of Square Knot Picots, varying the distance
between each of the knots. The space between knots should
range between 1 and 2 ½ inches. These are the “leaves”
of the evergreen, and they don’t need to all be the
same size. Stop when you have approx. 8 inches of cord left.
|
| |
| Step 11: To
make the Berries, tie an Overhand knot with the 2 red strands.
Next, take the green strands and tie the first half of a Square
knot, below the OH knot. As you tighten it, tug upward on
the "berry" a little, so it stands out. Then tie
the second half of the Square knot. To finish, turn the design
over, and tie Barrel knots in all the strands. Trim the remainder
to 1 inch, and feed the ends through the knots on the underside. |
| |
| TIP: You
can make berries throughout the Christmas Candle Evergreen,
by following step 11. When you tighten the first half of the
Square knot, the red cords should fold slightly, making the
berries pop up, so they are more visible. |
| |
| Step 12:
Repeat Steps 9 thru 11 for the remaining 9 "leaves"
making up the Evergreen Wreath of the Christmas Candle. |
| |
| |
Putting the Sections Together |
| |
| |
 |
Step
13: Attach one of the flowers to the candle by
passing 2 of the gold cords through the design near the
bottom. You will need your needle nose
pliers to do this. Then tie a Square Knot (2 fillers) with
the 4 gold cords. Repeat for the second flower. |
|
| |
| |
 |
Step
14: Pass the 4 filler cords from
step 13 through the center of the ring, followed by the
candle. Direct the remaining 4 gold strands across the ring,
between two of the Larks Head Knots. They
should be opposite one another. On the underside, they will
join the cords passed through the ring. |
|
| |
| |
Finishing Touches |
| |
| |
 |
Step 15: Turn
the design over, so you have access to the underside of the
Christmas Candle design. Make a Square Knot with the 2 groups
of 4 gold strands. Switch cords, so the working cords now
become fillers. Make another Square knot. Apply glue, and
when dry, cut off the remainder. |
