Celtic Necklace
|
| |
|
| |
| Description:
This Celtic Necklace pattern is unique in the fact that it
calls for a “freeform” knot. That means you create
your own knot as part of this Micro-Macrame design. Part of
the fun of Macrame includes designing your own knots, and
this pattern gives you that opportunity. All you need to do
is find a Celtic art design that you like, and try to mimic
the design with cord. Practice a few times, and you are ready
to incorporate it into a Celtic necklace.
Supplies Needed:
- 2mm Cotton or Nylon cord, or similar material
- 2 Shank Buttons (a small one for the clasp and a larger
one for the Pendant)
- 4 Beads with holes big enough for 4 strands of cord
- Project Board and Pins
Knots Used:

Creating the Pendant |
| |
Step 1: Cut 4 strands of cord, each 240
inches long. Slide the button used for the pendant over
all 4 strands, so it rests in the center of the cords. Tie
2 Square Knots to secure it. Glue the knots to the back
of the button, and allow it to dry.
Step 2: Make your freeform knot, or one
of your favorite Celtic Knots described in this site.
Tip: A great place to find Celtic art
patterns is Free
Celtic Interlace Clipart.
The designs are free and can be used to help you create
beautiful Celtic knots. When I come across an interesting
pattern, I simply print it out, and secure the cord material
to the printed design. Once I am satisfied with the knot,
I remove the pins, and tighten.

Making the Necklace |
| |
Step 3: Divide the strands up into two
groups. The following steps apply to both sets of cords.
Tie a Braid Knot, approximately 7 inches long. Push the
bottom of the design towards the top, to make the plait
waved.
Step 4: Tie a Square Knot. Add a bead
to all 4 strands, and tie another one.
Step 5: Make a Celtic Square Knot, using
2 strands together.
Step 6: Repeat step 4.
Step 7: Make an Alternating Half Hitch
chain, approximately 4 inches in length.
Step 8: Make another Celtic Square Knot,
the same as in step 5.
Step 9: Repeat step 7. |

Finishing Touches and Clasp |
| |
| |
 |
|
Step 10:
On the left portion of the Celtic necklace, add the button
for the clasp. Leave enough room to tie a Wrapped Knot to
secure it. You’ll need to cut an extra piece of cord
to make the knot. Cut off any excess, and apply glue to the
entire wrapping. |
|
| |
| Step 11:
On the other end, tie a Square Knot. Leave enough space for
the button to pass through, and tie a Hanger Knot. Apply glue,
and cut off any extra cord. |
