Celtic Cross Pendant
|
| |
 |
| |
| Description: I created this Celtic Cross Pendant for a friend, and it turned out so well, I decided to share it. This Micro-Macrame design itself is relatively simple, but tying Button knots is a challenge. Please be sure to review the process for tying them, as well as the other knots used, before you get started. I made the pendant with Satin Rattail Cord, but Leather and Nylon materials work well too. |
| |
Supplies Needed:
- Satin Rattail Cord (Highly recommended), or other material
- Project Board and Pins
- Cellophane or Masking Tape
- Needle-Nose pliers
|
| |
Knots Used:
|
| |
| |
Creating the Loop at the Top |
| |
Step 1: Cut 1 strand of cord 65 inches long.
Step 2: Fold it in half and make the Cross Knot. The loop should be approximately ¼ inches in size. Secure the design to your project board. I know it's a Chinese technique, but is works out really well for the Celtic Cross Pendant. |
| |
| |
Desigining the Vertical Sections |
| |
Step 3: Make a Sliding Celtic Button Knot. Use the left strand to design the knot, and the right strand to hold it. Adjust and tighten the button so that it rests just below the Cross Knot.
Tip: When you make the second loop of the Button Knot, put a pin where both loops cross each other. In the final step of the knot, when you pass the end into the middle, the space you go through is just below the pin. |
| |
| |
 |
|
Step 4: Make a Celtic Square Knot. Adjust and tighten it so it rests close to the Button knot, and is ½ to 1 inch in size. The loops should be symmetrical. Tape it to your board, so it won’t be pulled out of shape when you tie the next knot. Click on the image to see a larger view of the design. |
|
|
Step 5: Tie a Sliding Celtic Button, just as you did in step 3.
Step 6: Design another Celtic Square Knot, as in step 4.
Step 7: Tie an additional Sliding Celtic Button, and another Celtic Square Knot.
Step 8: Make the final Celtic Button Knot for the Vertical portion of the design. |
| |
| |
Finishing Touches |
| |
| Step 9: Tie a tight Square Knot with no fillers, so it rests against the Button knot. Pass the ends back through the Button. Tie another Square Knot, so it rests in the back of the Button, and cannot be seen. Apply glue, and when it is completely dry, cut off any remaining cord. |
| |
| |
Designing the Horizontal Arms |
| |
- Cut 2 strands of cord material, each 40 inches long.
Step 10: Slide both 40-inch strands through the second Button Knot made in step 5. Pass them through the back portion of the knot. Center the cords, so you have the same amount to work with on both sides. |
| |
Step 11: Tie a Celtic Square Knot with the cords for the left “arm” of the Celtic Cross Pendant. Adjust the knot so it is symmetrical, and apply tape to hold the shape.
Step 12: Tie a Sliding Celtic Button knot in the same manner you tied the others. |
| |
| |
Finishing Touches |
| |
Step 13: Repeat Step 9.
Step 14: Repeat steps 10 through 13 for the right “arm” of the Celtic Cross Pendant. Remove the tape carefully. Are you making a necklace? Simply pass the cords for it through the loop at the top of the design. |
