Basic Bracelet

Basic Bracelet

Description: This Basic Bracelet is very attractive, and an easy Micro-Macrame project for a beginner. It's best to make it with cord that holds the shape of the knots, such as leather or waxed cord. You can vary the pattern by adding unusual types of beads, or other decorative knots. Try to choose a button for the clasp that has a unique design. If using leather, Be sure to use the Cross-pin technique. See Knotting Tips for details.

Supplies Needed:
  • 1mm – 2mm Round Leather, or Braided Macramé Cord.
  • 5 – 7 Small Round Beads
  • 1 Shank-type button for clasp
  • Project Board and Pins

Knots Used: Overhand Knot and Sailors Knot.

Making the Clasp

Step 1: Cut a piece of cord, 72 inches long for a small to medium sized bracelet, and 78 in. for a large one. Slide the button on so it rests in the middle of the cord. Match up the 2 ends. Tie an Overhand knot using both portions of the cord, so it rests just below the button.

Designing the Bracelet

Step 2: Use both strands to tie the first Sailors Knot. Adjust it so the loops are even. Try to make it as small as you can, but so you can still see the design clearly.

Step 3: Slide a round bead over both strands. If you are using leather, this is pretty easy, but if not, you may need to use a piece of wire to help pull the ends through the bead. See Macrame Beads for tips and ideas to embellish this Basic Bracelet.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3, and tie a total of 6 knots. If making a large bracelet, tie a few more knots. After you are satisfied with the length, and overall design of the bracelet, make an Overhand Knot using both ends.

Finishing Touches

Step 5: Leave enough space for the button to pass through easily, and tie a final Overhand Knot. Trim the ends close to the knot. Apply glue if you are using cord other than leather.
