Angel Ornament

Angel Ornament

Description:  This little Angel ornament was originally designed more than 25 years ago.  I wrote this Macramé pattern based on an image of it.  You can embellish this design by adding beads to the skirt and wings.  Instead of a flower, this pretty Angel can hold bells, a tiny basket, or other small items. I would reate this pattern as easy, but children as well as beginners may need to review the knots before making it.

Supplies Needed:

  • 3mm – 4mm Nylon cord or similar material (20 yards total)
  • 1-inch diameter Brass or Gold Ring
  • Project Board and pins
  • Needle Nose Pliers

Knots Used:

Cutting and Mounting the Cords

Cut the cords as follows:

  • 6 strands, each 60 inches long
  • 8 strands, each 40 inches long
  • 1 strand, 20 inches long

Prepare the cords by applying glue, tape, or wax to the ends to prevent unraveling.

Step 1:  Attach each of the 60-inch strands to the Ring with Larks Head Knots.  You will have 12 strands to work with when you are finished.  Push all the knots together.  Secure the ring to your project board with pins, so it is resting on the edge that contains the knots, and is upright.

The ring is the Halo of the Angel ornament. As you work on the head, it will form directly underneath it.

  Diagram

Here's a diagram of the different steps you will be following, and what the knots look like.

You can click on any of the small images on this page, and larger photos of the Angel Ornament will show up in a new window.

Designing the Head

Step 2: Tie 3 Square Knots using 4 strands as double working cords (2 strands working together x2. The remainder are the fillers.  As you tie the knots, make sure the ring stays upright.

Form the Square Knot Button by directing all the ends through the space between the Ring and the first Square knot tied.

To secure the button, tie one Square knot just below it, using the same double working cords.

Creating the Body

Step 3: Separate the cords into three groups of 4.  Use the center group to tie a Spiral Stitch design for the body.  It should be approximately 2 ½ inches long.

At the end, switch the cords so the working cords become the fillers.  Tie 1 Square Knot to finish the body of the Angel Ornament.

Making the Arms

Step 4: The other 2 groups of cords are for the arms.  Use the longest strands as working cords.  Tie a chain of 8 Square Knots.

Switch the cords so the working cords become fillers, and tie a final Square knot.

Repeat the process for the second arm of the Angel Ornament.

Designing the Wings

Step 5: Using each of the 40-inch strands, make a loop in the center of the cord.  Tie a Square knot with no fillers to form the loop.  You should design the loops so there are 2 small, 4 medium size, and 2 large ones.

Setting Up the Loops for the Wing   Secure each loop to the project board in a horizontal row. Place the small ones near the center, and the large ones at the outside edge of the wing design. There should be a 1-inch space between the smallest loops near the center.

Step 6:  Center the 20-inch strand horizontally, resting next to the knots. It will be used as a holding cord the first row of knots. Secure it at both ends with a pin, so it is taut.  Attach all the wing strands to it with Double Half Hitches (DHH).

Step 7:  Take the strand furthest to the right, and direct it over all the other cords, heading left.  This will be used as a holding cord for the right half of the design.  Attach the cords to it with DHH.  Stop when you reach the space in the center of the design.

Step 8:  Use the cord furthest to the left, and bring it to the right, as a holding cord for the left half of the design.  Attach all the strands to the left of the central space with DHH.

Step 9:  Tie a Square Knot (with no fillers), using the 2 holding cords. They are resting directly in the center of the design.

Step 10:  For the next row of knots, repeat steps 7 and 8. Use 2 strands furthest to the right and left of the design as the holding cords.  Attach all the vertical strands to them with DHH, including the ones in the center.

Step 11: When you are finished the row, tie one Square Knot using the 4 holding cords (2 fillers).

Completed Wing Design   Step 12:  Repeat step 10 for the final row of knots.  Be sure to attach all the strands to the holding cords, even if it’s a tight fit.  The knots may dip down slightly, forming a point, when the Square Knot is tied.

Step 13:  Flip the Wings over. Ignore the 2 strands at the bottom center of the design.  You won’t be using them for this step.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers or tweezers to weave the remaining ends into the wing design.  They will fit better if you work them in between the rows of DHH. Do the same with the tails of the very first holding cord you used, at the top of the wing design.

Attaching the Wings to the Body

Step 14:  Use the 2 strands you saved in the previous step to attach the wings to the body of the Angel ornament.  The bottom of the wing design should rest close to the bottom of the body.

The best way to do this is to tie a Square Knot around the Spiral Stitch design.  The ends can then be used as part of the skirt.

Step 15:  Obtain a 12-inch piece of scrap cord, and pass it through spaces in the Angel's body, where the top of the wing needs to be attached.

Then pass the ends through the wing, so they end up in the back of the design.  Tie a Square Knot (no fillers) to hold the wing in place.

Finishing Touches

Step 16:  Trim all the strands in the back of the wing to 1 inch.  Apply glue to each of the strands, so they stick against the design  I like to apply tape to hold them in place while the glue is drying.

To finish the arms of the Angel Ornament, pass the strands through the body, near the bottom. Tie either Square knots or Overhand knots to secure them. Apply glue, and cut off the remainder.

Trim the strands for the skirt, and tie an Overhand Knot near the end of each one.  Unravel the small piece beyond the knot, so it fluffs.

Close-Up View of Angel Ornament   This is a closer view of the finished Angel Ornament. I added a flower to embellish it. The original design had a bell. You can also use buttons, beads, or other small items.
