Alternating HH Patterns
|
| |
|
| |
| There are several
different Alternating HH Patterns used in Macrame, to make
various types of chains. You may want to review the process
of making standard Alternating
Half Hitches, and Double
Half Hitches, before trying the different patterns described
below. |
| |
|
|
Pattern
#1
You’ll
need 2 strands of cord to practice. Secure one end of them
to your work surface. Make a single half hitch with the
left strand, onto the right. Leave about ½ inch of
space, and make another using the right strand, onto the
left. Continue this pattern to make the rest of the chain.

Pattern #2
Obtain 3 cords to
work with, and secure them to your work surface. The center
one will be the holding cord for all the knots. Tie a Half
Hitch onto it, using the left strand. Then make another
Half Hitch, using the right one. Leave ½ to 1 inch
of space, and repeat the process.

Pattern #3
You’ll need
4 strands to work with for this unique pattern. Secure the
ends to your work surface. The two strands in the middle
are the holding cords. Take the right strand, and make a
Half Hitch around the holding cord closest to it. Then take
the left strand, and do the same.
Next, tie a Half Hitch with the right strand onto both
holding cords. Do the same with the left strand. Repeat
this process for the remainder of the chain. |

Alternating HH Patterns - Double Half Hitches
You can create a variety of decorative chains using Double
Half Hitches in the same manner as above.

 |
|
Pattern #4
Start with 2 cords. Use the one on the left, and make a
DHH onto the right strand. Leave approx. ½ inch of
space, and switch cords, so the left holds the knot. Continue
alternating in this fashion to complete the chain.

Pattern #5
This Double Half Hitch chain starts out with 3 cords, the
middle one holding the knots. Use the left strand, and tie
a DHH onto it. Then do the same with the right one. Repeat
the process to form the rest of the chain.

Pattern #6
You’ll need 3 cords to work with for this pattern.
The center cord will hold the knots. Make 2 or 3 DHH knots
with the right strand. Then do the same with the left one.
This pattern results in a section of unknotted cord along
the edge of the chain.
